If these crossovers don't get "substantially" better mileage I really don't see the point. I would rather just get a true SUV and keep all the utility. Seems like all of these options offer maybe 2-3 more MPG with a lot less utility. Based on what's out there now I would be hard pressed not to go with the new Equinox or if you can afford the premium/want the label, the Escape Hybrid.

At least with those choices you still get decent height in the cargo space where you can really stack a lot of crap.
