Steve Jobs responds on iPhone SDK's new Section 3.3.1

Apr 11th 2010 11:22AM (TUAW.com)
" or be able to tell Xcode from Flash on a bet. "

I find it curious that you mention this, Megan. This sounds very similar to the old Carbon vs. Cocoa argument. For a long time, folks like those from the Firefox crowd argued, "Oh, well, we don't need to move to Cocoa; users won't notice." But, the truth is, they will through acclimation. Just as users became increasingly aware of the fact that Firefox used 10-year-old frameworks as other browsers like Chrome, Safari, and even Camino rose up, users would be able to tell the difference between a Flash-based and a UIKit-based iPhone app if Flash apps were to prevent multitasking, murder their battery, and lack system integration (push, volume control, savestates). Or, more to the point, you say users wouldn't be able to tell between the two visually. Ask a regular iPhone user their opinion of two apps side by side, one totally designed around and for the platform (say, one that's won an Apple UI award like the billion Twitter clients) and one that lacks the UI polish that they've come to expect on the iPhone (including, but not limited to, native font rendering, CoreAnimation, seamless jumping to OS apps like Safari and Mail, etc). Even the stupidest Joe iPhone User will be able to tell.

PS3 firmware 3.21 is out: say goodbye to 'install other OS'

Apr 1st 2010 12:43AM (Engadget)
@Granger: The shutdown message is a 3.0 addition for phat PS3's; it only appears if you turn it off via the back switch. Even if a game crashes, you shouldn't need to equivalently pull the plug on the device since the XMB runs over the game...

Apple seeds Mac OS X 10.6.3 build 10D573 to devs, release probably not imminent

Mar 25th 2010 5:01PM (TUAW.com)
I'm excited because it's likely to bring the stability 10.5.3 brought Leopard. Their obsession with OpenGL also leads me to believe that it'll have the kind of performance enhancements that will make Steam on OS X enjoyable.

Steam's definitely coming to Mac -- and maybe Valve's first-party games too!

@Sebastian: EA was the one to port it to PS3.

This app would make those stupid/funny/insane moments where you want to record it while you're with friends much easier to handle.

Adobe wants Flash on the iPad, but Apple customers don't

Yes, that _totally_ makes sense. Apple rewrote a whole plugin stack in Safari because they wanted to provide backwards compatibility to plugins who refuse to update.

Nobody knows what the hell these "exposed APIs" you and Adobe keep talking about are. QTKit is fully-featured and can do everything one needs as far as decoding video. If they aren't using it, they're not trying.

Updated script makes creating text files from Mac's Finder even easier

How can you stand using TotalFinder still? I know I bragged and applauded about it a couple of days ago, but... seriously. The first time I had to open a DMG I uninstalled TotalFinder five minutes later.

TotalFinder brings tabs to Mac OS X!

I imagine you should suggest it at their site. Also, it also implements Chrome's tap-ripping and does it a might bit faster, too; ripping takes all of half a second.

TotalFinder beefs up Finder

Jan 15th 2010 6:29PM (TUAW.com)
Jesus, why all the hate for SIMBL? It's great!

I think TotalFinder is awesome (and 64-bit, too; that assauges my anal-retentive-Mac-app-whatever-ness). My only problem is that you can't drag files between tabs. However, since it rips (and, by that, I mean duplicates exactly) Chrome's tabs, at least "ripping" is easy to do.

Latest Chromium build for Mac finally adds a bookmark manager

Because it seems not to freeze up my Mac like I'm running Windows fucking 95.
