Minecraft didn't become an overnight sensation because of it's excellent narrative.
And even the top-selling RPGs are the ones that give the players the most choice and open-ness in the world.
Video game developers thinking they can tell good stories is why we get awful stories shoved down our throats when we're playing good games. (Gears of War, Metal Gear Solid, Etc)
