I saw monthly subscription and was immediately turned off.

Then I realized, I automatically equate monthly subscription to $15~ because of most MMO games the last 13 years.

If this was say, a few bucks a month, I would definitely be more inclined to check it out.

My first (graphical) MMO was The Realm, and I also played UO, but I chose EQ. Did I do it wrong?

Much better than modern MMOs. I've been playing EQ on the Al'Kabor (mac) server for a few months now, and it's as good or better than I remembered. You'd be amazed at how a difficult game designed for teamwork can build an amazing community. You meet more people in a week of EQ than in years of all the soloable no-fail games since.
