That is not what the poll says. It says 81 of those in the 5-8 age group have played a console, and 44% of those in ages 2-4 have. The 51% is the average response for all of kids age 2-8. So, the number of kids who have played by age 8 would be much higher than 81.
I don't think people are reading this correctly. It is saying that out of all kids polled in the age group of 2-8, only 51% have played a console. So, 2 years not playing drag down the number. It goes on to say 81% of those in the 5-8 group have played. Makes a lot more sense.
