Prototype 2 preview: To Heller and back

Jun 6th 2011 9:59AM (Joystiq)
I'm pleased to see a sequel. The last game was rough around the edges with meh graphics and an unfathomable story, but the core gameplay (reminescent of that found in Hulk: Ultimate Destruction) was pretty fun and more enjoyable to me than the original Infamous.

Being incredibly honest, I am skeptical that the sequel will see much of a substantial overhaul--I imagine it will take the place of the annual Spider-Man open world releases with minor gameplay tweaks, but always lacking polish.

Bodycount squeezes off six shots, demo on the way

I hope this game shows better than it did at E3 last year, because it showed abysmally. The only thing more offensive than the muddy textures and pedestrian gameplay was hearing Stuart Black's (no longer with the project) absurd spin (he compared the game to Lady Gaga and said that the canned destructibility demonstrated that "every bullet tells a story in 3 acts."

SideQuesting explains the physics of Portal 2

Glad0S has already extensively explained this in the original game: "Speedy thing goes in. Speedy thing comes out."

Brink's latest trailer is hacking your mainframe

I used to think I liked the movie Hackers more than most people. After all, the majority of people don't even remember that that movie exists.

Then I started reading Joystiq. Those guys really, really like Hackers. Like a lot.

Prey 2 ditches portal and gravity gameplay

Apr 1st 2011 1:29PM (Joystiq)
@Dralthi I don't think your point demonstrates that Joystiq did not do its homework. You are giving a narrative justification for why the unique gameplay elements in the first entry are being dropped. But that does not mean it is good or wise. Gameplay is king. There could be lots of narrative reasons why the next Assassin's Creed could be a military shooter, but that wouldn't make it a good idea.

And no, the sequel need not have "the exact same mechanics" nor should it. But sequels should usually build upon defining mechanics. But they aren't building upon the portals, nor are they even exploring other, more interesting puzzle types. Instead they want to "get away from" puzzles as much as possible. I think it's fair for that to be cause for concern.

FEAR 3 trailer is all about family values

F.E.A.R. is definitely one of those franchises I follow for the solid gameplay and very general mood, but all the marketing is always about the specifics narrative that I never understood or followed:

"This Spring: Paxton Fettel RETURNS."

"Who?"

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters will shine in 3D

Maybe because "Rise of the Manhunters" sounds like some kickin' gay porn.
