I think a lot of people are missing the point of the kindle. It's not the kindle itself that is exciting it's the concept it represents. iPods when they first arrived were extremely expensive even compared to todays models and people could have argued why bother buying an MP3 player when I already have a CD player and a bunch of CDs. The point is the technology is moving things forward, they are not just producing a product they are producing a whole new ecosystem for buying books. The cost is just a volume and technology issue. As soon as e-ink screens become cheaper and more easier to produce price will come down, but it will also be dependent on people buying it in the first place to get volume up. Like all new technology it'll be the people now who are willing to pay the $500 who will ultimately be making it so that in a few years time people can buy it for $50 or $100. Technology like this needs supporting, the more support it gets the faster it will move.
Personally I still like the idea of having a much cheaper device and then a fixed monthly payment and the ability to read as much as I like when I like for that monthly payment.
