Trophy timestamps are 'translated' when comparing with friends

When I downloaded the 2.40 update, I expected to automatically recieve trophies for completing games, or for stuff I've aready accomplished. I obviously have no idea how it works, and what games it works with. Is it just for PSN games? I noticed the Fatal Inertia EX demo had a trophy menu.Could I get someone here to fill me in on how trophies work, or at least send me a link? I must sound so lazy, but I just really hate surfing for info sometimes, I'd rather just ask.
