Blizzard's Pardo: 'DOTA' belongs to community, not Valve

Oct 25th 2010 12:47PM (Joystiq)
Hahahahahaha, oh Blizzard, how can you possibly make a fuss about this when in the terms and conditions for Starcraft 2 there exists a clause that states any mod created using the Starcraft 2 engine as platform is the sole property of Blizzard and not the creator.

Hypocrisy thy name is the sweaty goons in charge of Activision.

Holy colour saturation Batman! So pretty my eyes are watering.

This game in motion is going to be an epileptic's worst nightmare.

THQ: Warhammer 40K MMO will profit with 'anywhere near' a million subs

May 5th 2010 8:14PM (Joystiq)
My point being that if Blizzard wants to add something to WoW but it doesn't quite fit the lore, they can simply bend the lore or add an exception as they see fit, the quality of the gameplay never has to be sacrificed to pre-existing restrictions.

While THQ are the sole developers of 40k games and they have a tried and tested partnership with Games Workshop (Dawn of War II is a superb lesson in how RTS games should play) it doesn't mean there won't be creative clashes. An MMO, which has such an enormous amount of content in comparison to other genre's, will exacerbate these disputes, and they will certainly have a greater impact in their outcome than they would in an RTS or a regular FPS with a multiplayer component.

THQ: Warhammer 40K MMO will profit with 'anywhere near' a million subs

I don't like games based on pre-existing IP's that the developers don't own the creative rights to.

It creates a huge clash between what the players with no interest in WHM40k itself and the serious Warhammer lore buffs.

Developers can't add a certain gun/alliance/race/vehicle/boss/skill into the game because it clashes with the lore and the game suffers, or they do it anyway and lose the interest of the 40k fans by not being faithful to the source material. Either way, both parties suffer, and it can cause the game's player base to falter. It really constricts the developer's ability to make unique and interesting classes while maintaining balance. The result being that classes are almost direct mirrors of their opposing faction counterparts.

It's precisely what happened with WAR.

Between this hoping for 1 million and SWTOR hoping for 2 million, MMO's are clearly getting bigger and bigger production budgets. Whether or not they wish to directly compete with WoW is irrelevant, if they don't offer more content, balance, diversity and enjoyment for the subscription fee in comparison to big MMO machine then they won't reach their numbers. It's a big ask against a game with 6 years of post release development behind it.

You can tell a game has a heaving, grunting monster of a hype machine when even its marketing has marketing.

Bring on the hauntingly beautiful music Bungie!

Star Wars: The Old Republic dev diary explains fair, heroic combat

Apr 23rd 2010 8:42PM (Joystiq)
So in end game content, rather than 40 vs 1, you'd have to fight off huge waves or enemies, or storm through a massive fortress with 3-4 other guys then face off 5v5 against some equally powerful NPC's and use teamwork to divide and conquer?

Now that, is exhilarating and rewarding combat.

There is a superb video on youtube by some fella who analyzes all the combat gameplay shown so far and it's actually pretty astonishing how reactive and cinematic it looks when you slow it down. When it's going in real time it's harder to appreciate but put it up side by side with another MMO and the difference is almost hysterical.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 coming spring 2011 to PS3, Xbox 360

Apr 20th 2010 3:06PM (Joystiq)
You'll also notice the outlines of Deadpool, Captain America, Dr. Doom, Chun Li and Viewtiful Joe (Possibly Cammy in the middle, Frank West 2nd from the left?) in the Marvel and Capcom signs at the beginning.

It's probably a better indicator of Marvel's lineup for this game than Capcom's as they look like the lineup from Tatsunoku Vs Capcom.

You'd hope they don't just transplant the Capcom roster from TvC.

Apparently I look like this guy. I think he looks like one of those stone heads on Easter Island.

Does that mean I look like a giant stone head?
