EA jumps on the in-game ad bandwagon [update 1]

Aug 31st 2006 3:42PM (Joystiq)
The problem I have is with the idea that these ads will somehow add realism to the game world. They will be constantly rotating, and new spots can easily be added or changed. I believe those two factors will prevent any in-game streaming ads from being immersive or easy to ignore.

Wii Zelda gets some major changes [update 1]

Aug 21st 2006 11:27AM (Joystiq)
As long as they don't cancel the GC version, then this is fine. I think this change really shows who Nintendo is going after for the Wii. Miyamoto never said that this control change wouldn't make you tired, because it will if you want to play it for an hour or two. Aside from swinging the sword around, you'll have to keep your arms relatively still or else you'll accidentally swing your sword or throw something with the nunchuck, for instance. Even if you could rest your arms and just use your wrists, it seems it would be even easier to make a mistake with the increased sensitivity. The Wii version, however, is not designed to be played for more than 20 minutes at a time because the system is aimed at people who don't play games and will rarely have the time or desire to play any longer.

That's why I'm getting the GC version.

Advergaming built into next-generation DNA?

Jul 17th 2006 2:20PM (Joystiq)
Probot:

I look at it this way: if a developer has to taint their game with ads in order to offset development costs, then I won't buy it. And if I don't buy it, it's no different to me if the game was never released. There is a point when it's not even worth saving development costs, because the developers will have to give up so much to release the game that you won't even want to play it. I believe in-game ads have crossed that point, at least for me.

Advergaming built into next-generation DNA?

Jul 17th 2006 1:13PM (Joystiq)
I'm hoping the Wii will escape in-game ads for at least another generation, but the comment from Nintendo in that article doesn't sound like an outright denial to me, ads weren't even mentioned. The games might not have to rely on ads, but does that mean they won't be put in there anyway? Not necessarily. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I can never really understand why some gamers support ads, as you can see in some comments. It's always justified by the fact that development costs are high. Why should you care about development costs? If you're worried more about the people making games than the games themselves, eventually you'll sacrifice so much that you won't even care about playing games anymore. I think some of the people supporting these ads are already at that point. Worry about the product, not the developer.

Another Wii mystery port spotted

Jul 10th 2006 7:17PM (Joystiq)
Yeah, I noticed this port back when the final design sketches were found. I thought there was a second longer one, but it seems that's just where the sticker goes. It would make sense to have the DVD attachment go in there, but is it possible that there is room left over for something else? Perhaps the system can connect to the stand through that bottom port, and the remaining hardware secrets lie inside the stand. I remember ONM mentioned that the stand would double as a power supply. I know they said it was a mistake in the next issue, but maybe they just weren't supposed to reveal that.

And BPMΩ (#40), yes there is a hole in the stand. There is a second vent on the bottom of the Wii located above that hole, which is designed to bring in air from the outside. I believe the Gamecube did the same thing.

Pink is the new DS Lite

How about a transparent DS Lite? I always thought those transparent purple N64 systems were pretty badass, though it would be better without the purple.

Gold would also be good.
