Gabe Newell trashes PS3's Cell architecture

Aug 26th 2007 2:12AM (Joystiq Playstation)
As owner of both a 360 and PS3, I can't say that I'm super-thrilled with the PS3 Fall/Winter line-up. While I splurged for the price cut, there's not much to be excited about in 2007. Remember, at this point in the 360s lifecycle, we had a holiday with both Gears of War AND Rainbow Six Vegas.

The second holiday season for the PS3 is coming and there's almost nothing to be excited about. I'm aching for little big planet and eye of judgement, but until a real date comes for GT and MGS, there's not much to play.

The 360 is going into its third holiday season with some formidable exclusives (Bioshock, Mass Effect, Halo 3, Blue Dragon) and a price cut. I will buy and play them all.

I've got the sinking feeling that Sony is repeating mistakes of the PSP with the PS3 and piling on technical complications for good measure.

Bioshock PC demo config file hints strongly at a PS3 version

Aug 22nd 2007 8:32AM (Joystiq Playstation)
I've been playing Bioshock on my 360 and it's so good that it infiltrates your dreams. I don't understand the excitement that it may be coming to the PS3 months, even a year from now.

GRAW 2 was great, like six months ago when I played to death on the 360. As a multi-platform gaming household, the Playstation 3 is going to need more exclusives or at least timed exclusives to get folks interested. Frankly, there's not much on the immediate horizon that I am excited about.

The reality is that despite greater platform potential, the multi-platform ports have been consistently mediocre -- lower frame rates, muddier textures, missing features. Feeding on 360 scraps ported to the PS3 to make a few extra $$$ shouldn't get fanboys so excited.

If you want to play Bioshock on your PS3 today, simply purchase Microsoft's $349 expansion module for the PS3. It's got HDMI, so you can plug it right into your setup.

3D Realms wants Duke Nukem on the XBLA

Great. Now another Duke Nukem game that will never arrive.

Jeff Minter vents about the XBLA cert process

Total bullocks. Take Two and Rockstar need GTAIV to be released in time for the holiday season. They're not going to turn away 10m potential customers if there are technical issues holding back the PS3 release.

Rockstar has been consistent on message -- the 360 will offer the most complete GTAIV experience. They got millions from MS to make that happen.

...back on topic...

I'm itching for some space giraffe. Llamatron on the Amiga remains one of my favorites of all time.

Fatal Intertia demo now on Live

Aug 2nd 2007 9:56AM (Joystiq)
I played the demo this morning. Given the ridiculous CGI trailer they showed a year or so ago, I had low expectations -- there was no way that they could get close to that CGI.

All that said, the demo plays fast and the physics actually add to the game play. The limited demo power-ups hold few surprises except for the grappling hook. Maybe we'll see more creativity for power-ups in the full version.

Having played a Wipe Out and F-Zero, I liked it. There's really no current generation equivalent to either of those games.

Is that experience worth $59? We'll see what the final game looks like.

X3F review: Bomberman Live

Jul 24th 2007 5:18PM (Joystiq Xbox)
Since its release, Bomberman has been the game of choice in my household. My daughters love it. The basic mechanics are easy for any one to pick up and play. The costume unlocking is a huge plus for the 10 and under crowd.

Killzone 2 screenshot to get us hyped for tonight's demo event

"alot of it going on in the scene"?

It's a picture of an NPC blocked into a corner. Chunky shadows and low res textures. Underwhelming.

Belgian dealer axes Brilliance BS6

Jul 2nd 2007 3:08PM (Autoblog)
I owe my life to a Chevy Cobalt rental car. Take this collision and crank it up to 80MPH. Then, spin the car around have a tractor trailer take off the back of the car.

It was an accident caused by a Toyota Landcruiser stopped in lane on a dark interstate with NO lights on.

I walked away. The state trooper told me "You should be dead".

I wouldn't sit in a car like this "Brilliance" if it was parked in a single car garage. I'm safer on a motorcycle.

Coming to Xbox Live Arcade: The Office?

Jun 20th 2007 1:17PM (Joystiq Xbox)
This is a terrible, terrible idea. The game concept sounds downright unappealing.

Better game concepts:
-2D Fighting game with character selection. Just hearing "Creed vs Phyllis" sells it. Uses sound-bites, samples and unorthodox fighting styles.
-Office Paintball. Simple FPS with multiplayer on XBOX Live. Characters provide commentary and narration. Dwight shouting "Finish him".
-Office Olympics. Game based off of competitions shown in episode from last season.

Haze confirmed as a timed exclusive for the PS3 - a one week exclusive [UPDATE]

Jun 20th 2007 7:53AM (Joystiq Playstation)
Are there any PS3-exclusive titles for this holiday season? Right now, it feels like the PS3 is only getting multi-platform titles. Multi-platform titles don't sell consoles.
