Engadget HD Podcast 175: Interview about the future of 3D cable TV - 01.22.2010

Jan 23rd 2010 10:56AM (Engadget HD)
@Yakuza Fighter
Amen.
Ben definitely has OCD and his current obsessions are 3D, Media Center and Cable cards\Tru2way of which get talked about to death whether they're in the news or not. 3D in this form will be a complete failure.
Ben him self said after he watched Avatar in 3D it didn't make him want to do the same in his home. He only really wants sports which narrows his obsession even more. I just hope those that share his passion only have one friend over to watch the game and hold their conversations until the commercial break when they take the glasses off.
Ben sorry to talk as if you weren't in the room. :) But you seem to be completely clueless on the countless logistical nightmares that this implementation bares.

3D stole the show at CES 2010

@BenD
Confused about your last sentence I think you forgot what we were talking about?? I can't hope to win a battle of ideas with you as you will surely have the last word on the podcast. :)
One last attempt from a listener from the very begining...
In order to grow your podcast or keep the audience you have you need to structure the topics to reflect what your audience wants. And it looks like they have spoken on this topic.

@BenD
Had no idea so many people didn't care to have a higher resolution and clearer picture when HDTV was coming along. :insert that $1.99 symbol here:
But nice to know you don't care what we have to say.

@BenD
Please don't ignore the sea of negative posts. I hope this helps you with deciding what gets discussed on the podcast since obviously no one shares your and Richards passion on this subject. Thanks for a great podcast other wise.

No one thinks it will be anything big. Of course everyone will have it built in their tv as we all end up replacing our tvs eventually. No one will have get togethers for games and show the 3d version because if you did have glasses for everyone it takes the whole social aspect away when you turn to look at the person you want to talk to and do you keep the glasses on during bathroom or snack breaks? Such a lame technology instead they should concentrate on increasing the resolution so we can't see pixels no matter how close we get. Wouldn't that also result in the "not flying at ya" 3d we all want?
Ben, Richard get on the same page as your listeners and ditch the 3d talk. It will be just as big a hit as flapping your arms like a chicken to change the channel.

Engadget HD Podcast 174 - 01.19.2010

3D TVs will be the next Wii, everyone will have one and no one will use it.
One thing for sure the amount of original 3D content will be eclipsed by the hours of 3D jabber on this podcast.
Why couldn't 4K be the next big thing? even upconverted 4K would be better than something that no one will want to use. Having conversations with your friends or family with those glasses on are going to be silly. All this hype for a couple of movies and\or games a year? Stop the madness and go dust off your Wii.

@Wwhat And maybe add a rotary dial on the remote as well.

@RandomGuy So any device that isn't spec'd to fit in a rack is crap?
I just think any complaining doesn't make logical sense when it if it were shaped like the wdtv it would be no more stackable.

@Smigit I agree. I still don't see how the popcorn hour, wii, wdtv or any of the new media players hitting the market are more stackable. What is someone going to stack on a wdtv? I don't think these devices are designed to support other devices or cool efficiently with people treating them like legos. Is everyone out of shelf space? Doesn't something have to be on top anyway? Why can't it be this device? Problem solved.

What moron would want to balance a DVD Player or other component on top of this device? Does anyone have their PS3 or 360 sitting on top of their WDTV or Popcorn hour? Obviously Dlink designed it this way to protect it from all the idiots that are complaining they can't stack anything on top of it.
I'll be buying one for sure; I also hope they sell the remote and a usb dongle that I can add to my Boxee PC's.
