E3 2009 press conference winners and losers: The Joystiq reader poll

Jun 8th 2009 11:33PM (Joystiq)
There should be a "blah" or "Nobody" option for the N/PS3/360 option. None of them really wowed anybody. Lots of "already knew about that."

'Media Go' to replace PSP Media Manager PC app

Media Go is up now. Just installed it, playing with it now.

More people web browse on PS3 than Wii

Jan 5th 2009 10:35AM (Joystiq Playstation)
This shouldn't be a surprise and is pretty much no news. PS3 has far more resources than the Wii, web browser is free on PS3 and costs money on the Wii. (Unless of course you got it for free when it first came out.)

PS3 web browser is actually pretty good now. Runs flash with out much problem, always had easy keyboard support and now the wireless keypad. Wii has added some keyboard support but nothing to be impressed with. Using the onboard keyboard with the Wiimote is annoying, and page loading is slow.

This pretty much falls under a no brainer.

Nielsen: People prefer playing original Xbox over PS3 in '08

Jan 3rd 2009 2:19PM (Joystiq Playstation)
This is most likely survey data, and sadly most people who volunteer for surveys aren't the brightest bulb in the bunch. They probably selected Xbox from the list of consoles because of the name. I work tech support for an ISP and the calls I hear about connecting to XBL all start with "I can't get my Xbox online." Not Xbox 360, not 360, just Xbox.

The Nielsen set top boxes to the best of my knowledge only collect TV based data since your only connecting your TV source to the box (Cable, satelite, etc;) and not all your TV devices like video games, DVD, Blu-Ray and more.

August NPD: 185k PS3s sold, high attach rates for Madden 09 and SCIV

Sep 12th 2008 7:49PM (Joystiq Playstation)
Yes, as much as those Blu-Rays have to help PS3 sales, they're not going to be what tips the scale in any noticeable direction. Just because we love our Blu-Ray movies and love watching them on our PS3s, Blu-Ray/HD saturation isn't very high yet.

There are 5 guys I work with all with PS3s and only 1 of those 5 has an HD set up, so the other 4 don't even bother with Blu-Ray movies. Blu-Ray on standard definition is just DVD to them. Yet for me and the other guy who have an HD set up, we fell in love with out PS3 all over again. I really think if PS3 was released when HD was already very affordable and everywhere the PS3 would own the world right now. Perhaps 2 years from now HD will have a huge saturation level and PS3 will out sell the Big Mac! haha

August NPD: 185k PS3s sold, high attach rates for Madden 09 and SCIV

Sep 12th 2008 4:39PM (Joystiq Playstation)
November is going to be pretty big for the 360 with Gears of War 2 and Fable 2. The fact that Gears 2 is now going to be a complete 360 exclusive I think it's going to sell well. Fable 2 on the hand seems to be showing some tarnish in a few articles I've read on it. It will likely sell well, but I think some reviews are going to turn out not so favorable and could effect it. OF course November is technically part of the holiday season, and Resistance 2 is the only big name I know of for PS3 in November. Here's hoping Bioshock (Year old game), LBP (Game we all pray can keep it's momentum.), SOCOM (Hordes of crazy hardcore fans.), and Resistance can ride into December and put a nice crown on "The Year of the PS3."

August NPD: 185k PS3s sold, high attach rates for Madden 09 and SCIV

I think October's NPD numbers are going to be a real tell of how the holiday season is going to end up. New PS3 SKU in full swing and having 3 highly anticipated games coming out mid month. (SOCOM 10/14 // Bioshock 10/21 // LittleBigPlanet 10/21) Bioshock may not move systems but SOCOM and LBP should. I believe PS3 has out sold X360 5 of the 8 months of the year, and September will likely show a spike in 360 sales. But October through the end of the year is where the battle ground is going to be.

Scott Steinberg answers some tasty interview questions

I think that PS2 users will ultimately gravitate to the PS3. Combination of publisher they most likely have an excellent relationship with on top of growing migration to HD will mean a lot of PS2 to PS3 conversions. Sadly frankym has a valid point. Xbox360 going after PS2 users with their lowest bundle is extremely cost effective for a group of people who are still enjoying the "budget bin." A $200 X360 when we still have PS2 bundles around that price point is smart marketing. "Well we couldn't beat the PS2 last generation, so let's steal it this generation."

PS3 is well-positioned for the first time, says Signal Hill analyst

Jul 22nd 2008 8:42PM (Joystiq Playstation)
B.C. for some systems will disappear at that logical point in time. Currently PSone support makes perfect sense as they're going to be releasing more (Hopefully.) PSone games via the PSN. As well as those of us who still have our PSone collection and are enjoying playing them via Remote Play on our PSPs. But the next iteration of the PlayStation won't need to support PSone games. However it may still be helpful to support PS2 and of course PS3 games at that time. They may release PS2 games via the PS Store like they do with the PSone games now. Who knows.

But at present B.C. is a great selling point and would encourage PS2 users to upgrade to the PS3. And let's face it, right now this is a huge target group for getting PS3s into consumer homes.

PS3 is well-positioned for the first time, says Signal Hill analyst

I agree and disagree with Señor Terrorist @ post 11.

I have a 60Gb model, that comes with the best backwards compatibility option of any of the available PS3 SKUs. It was important to have as I have a PS2 collection that consists of 40 games.

But I also have a PS2 sitting right next to my PS3, but it's my launch PS2 and could die at any moment. If that happens I will hold a 21 gun salute for the fallen soldier and then start playing on my PS3.

For other consumers I think it would be a huge selling point if when they decide to upgrade to the PS3 they can trade in their PS2, maybe a few of the games, and get a new PS3 that will allow them to continue playing the PS2 games they still have. Start watching Blu-Ray movies, slowly start buying PS3 games all while still enjoying their current PS2 library.

But Señor Terrorist is still correct in saying they're buying a Next-Gen console. Comes with A HDD to reduce load times on these new huge games that could potentially fill a 50Gb Blu-Ray disc, and displays glorious HD. Perhaps it should not be their main focus as you're going to be downloading Super Stardust HD and PixelJunk games from the PSN while playing Uncharted, Ratchet, MGS4, and waiting for Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet and more to come.

Rumor still says a B.C. firmware update will release later this year to allow the 20Gb, 40Gb, and new 80Gb some measure of B.C. so my friends can start borrowing my PS2 library, but rumors often don't fly.
