Sega's Shogun 2 expansion leads the charge on Origin

Mar 15th 2012 10:51AM (Joystiq)
The OP is partly wrong. You could buy and download Shogun 2 through other services -- I bought my copy through Sega direct with PayPal to explicitly avoid having to use Steam. But after it downloaded, it tried to force me to install Steam. I promptly uninstalled, opened a PayPal dispute and got my money back. I would NEVER install Steam on my computer again, nor buy a product that forces me to use that crap. And I can't stand the Steam community's attitude of bullying other people and products into using Steam exclusively.

So, will buying Shogun 2 through Origin allow users to play the game without Steam?

WoW loses another 100,000 subscribers

Feb 10th 2012 12:00AM (Massively)
@Arrowsmith ok, some people like the pandas and I know it was a legit feature request and it's classic Warcraft lore, but I'm an active WoW player as well, and the idea is terrible. And I'd bet that this expansion has more legit backlash and disinterest than any of the others. All the other new races were cool: the blood elves, the worgen, the draenai, and the goblins: nice!

Kung-fu Pandas? Way to kill the mood, Blizzard! Even the die hard WoW fans agree that was the dumbest idea ever.

Mass Effect 3 isn't launching on Steam, requires Origin

Jan 16th 2012 5:54PM (Joystiq)
The title of this post says, "requires Origin", yet the quote says "Mass Effect 3 will be available on Origin and a number of other 3rd party digital retailers" which implies that Origin is optional, not required.

IIRC, Valve's games like Portal 2, aren't on Origin, or any other download service, and even if you buy a disc copy, it still requires Steam to play. EA actually is the more flexible and reasonable company here. People act like Valve/Steam has some righteous position, which is ridiculous.

The Joystiq Show - Gamescom 2011 Day 0

What happened to the AAC version of the show with section headings? I loved to be able to skip through the section headings and listen to those pieces that interested me.

Marathon launches for free on iPad

Jul 7th 2011 10:07AM (Joystiq)
Marathon was the Macintosh parallel to Doom. Marathon was better though: it had proper look up/down and room-over-room geometry and more interesting characters, weaponry, and AI. But it came out in 1994, and FPS games have come a long way since then. If you look at pretty much any FPS game from the 90s it looks recognizable but primitive compared to today's offerings.

XBLIG creators express disappointment with low sales

Sequence, like the board game? I thought it is illegal to just co-opt the name from an existing game and use it as your own. You can't just make a new indie game and call it "Street Fighter" or "Doom".

BAFTA names Mass Effect 2 as game of the year, reveals all winners for 2011

Mar 17th 2011 1:20PM (Joystiq)
Mass Effect 2 was ok. The dialog was amazing, but the rest of the game was mediocre.

Red Dead Redemption was easily the game of the year. I know it wasn't registered as a nominee or whatever, but that's merely award show politics, not game quality.

@Co

Great first-post attack derail! I'm sure you can repeat this on every 3D related post

3DS and Rage are big winners of E3 2010 Game Critics Awards

So Rage and the 3DS are the "Scribblenauts" of 2010.
