PS3 bike commercial: This is living? This isn't even trying

Jan 24th 2007 5:16AM (Joystiq)
The ad seems like many of the other ads that are being churned out by advertising agencies, I don't think this is particularly unique to Sony.

I think it rather comical that there are calls for Sony to tell the truth about the system capabilities. According to Microsoft we are experiencing a 'gaming renaissance' with the launch of Vista. Does anyone actually think this is true?

They all lie, and exaggerate, and in order to get our attention in a mass of competing ads they have to lie and exaggerate more and more. I think that Microsoft are being given an easy time of late. Perhaps we should start bashing them about having a one game console (until Halo 3 and then it will have two games) and asking when we are going to see this 'next generation' they all promised. Everything seems to be a rerun of games I already played.

Let's compare visuals: Ridge Racer

Hi

To be honest this looks a bit wrong. The contrast on the PS3 pic is too high, and this causes it to look naff. The 360 pic also looks too dark which is reducing the detail. If you simply do an auto contrast adjustment in Photoshop it really improves the ps3 image. Looking closeup the car is less jaggy, and the trees have more detail. The water effect on the 360 pic is not there on the PS3 because it is a reflection, showing a perfectly calm lake.

I think the PS3 is better, although there is next to no difference, once the brightness/contrast has been set correctly, and this is down to the screen, not the console (and personal taste of course)

Teen Fighting For His Life After Breathing Scuba Diver's CO2, Update

Nice post Willy. What is the real shame is that if (when) something does happen to him, the headlines will be 'Freediving kills teenager' or something equally sensational.

Diving -- and Salvaging -- the Andrea Doria

Aug 1st 2006 11:39AM (Divester)
Hi Willy

I believe taking stuff from wreck is wrong, unless there is some real historic significance and the artefact will be cleaned up and displayed somewhere, but most of the time the idea is better than the reality and inevitably there are many artefacts left in garages to rot.

Yes, it should be left to Moyer.

Barry Miller Explains Himself...And Halcyon Bites Back

Apr 12th 2006 4:04AM (Divester)
I have trouble believing that Barry didn't understand how much trouble he would be in once he started taking stock and working on competitive products within the Halcyon workshops.

SCUPEDIA is on line

Hi Bill. I didn't want to say anything about wikiscuba as I thought it wasn't appropriate (and not relevant to my comment). I hate the word 'competition' because they are both principally non-commercial projects.

My point was that if anyone wants to use any information (say on their blog) then they need to get written permission (if it carries ads and is therefore commercial). The minor thing about being open to all is that you need to hand over an email address to join.

Thats all. I hope you do well, as the more information out there the better. I really don't want to ruin your post, as I like Divester a lot and wouldn't want to spoil the great atmosphere here.

Its a shame that the guys haven't been braver in terms of demanding non-biased articles and making the information free for all, which is the real coolness of Wikipedia

Divers Rescue 50-Ton Humpback Whale

Nice piece Willy. It is nice to read about a happy ending for the whale. Andy

Professional Dive Instructor Drowns

The statement is weird, but the journalists never really do understand dive reports. Its unclear how a diver would be entangled in tank lines either. My condolenses to Zak's family.

Learning To Cave Dive in Florida: A Trip Report

Nov 29th 2005 11:40AM (Divester)
Thanks for the mention Willy. Glad you enjoyed the report. Tyler has now finished teaching cave diving and is working to become a flight instructor. This report refers to the course I completed November 2004. I managed to go through Cave 2 with him in June this year before he quit. He was/is a very good instructor. Andy
