Nobody needs a 134-inch television

Feb 3rd 2007 4:05PM (AOL TV)
Absolutly not! Ive got a 110" projection screen in my living room. often i will turn it down to a "modest" 70 or so inches. but one of the unexpected benefits is mario kart!

While you watch your 60" sony, EACH of the FOUR of us have our own private 65" screen. its bliss!

plus, once you get widescreen content going, 110" really isnt all /that/ big anymore

Pac-Man moves from screens to highways

Dec 21st 2006 7:43PM (Joystiq)
you guys missed the best parts!

the state highway department is actually sort of pleased with it. They said whoever did it "really did a good job" and that it "wasnt a safety concern" and , "anything we can do to promote traffic safety, we are all for it!"

also very amusing was that the artist "apparently have touched it up once or more"

MacBooks packin' heat due to covered up vent?

May 25th 2006 1:04PM (Engadget)

#1 - macbook pros are overheating, not macbooks

#2 - by insulating foam, i assume you mean thermal paste. that was macbook pro, not macbook. (although it could be an issue on both)

#4 - my ibook, and macbook pro came ready to use inside of a foam slip case with no plastic of any sort. are the macbooks different?

VLC 0.8.5 released with Intel Mac, Growl support, many improvements

May 7th 2006 9:34PM (TUAW.com)
the reason is because the binary is 15MB of the 35MB download. a universal binary would raise the download size to 50MB.

also, xcode or not, anyone can make universal binaries. there are command line tools to assemble and reassemble them. its called "lipo"

MacBook Pro heat problem heats up

May 4th 2006 5:25PM (TUAW.com)
Apple is now locking and deleting threads that talk about the reapplication of thermal paste. this thread was extremely useful and had about 200 replies, and is now gone. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2252004

this thread, also locked, http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=468818&tstart=0

hey! i guess they finally noticed the problem, but its dissapointing they would go so far as to nuke the entire discussion. perhaps they saw the pictures of the giant bubble i appear to have had on my friends macbook as seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jkerman/139297049/in/set-72057594123497895/

On the MacBook Pro and GPU overclocking

Apr 22nd 2006 1:02AM (TUAW.com)
sorry, the manufacturer is APPLE. the macbook clearly has existing heat issues. I dont care what the chips are rated to run at in a lab, crammed in a tiny case the clock speed seems appropriate.

ATI cards support smart automatic clock scaling. in much the same way that a CPU speed can be dynamicly lowered on battery power, the same can be done with the GPU. It would seem apples motivation could have been overall system lifetime, and more than just simple noise.

Why would you want to 'over'clock? Not everyone uses their macbook for the battery. a full half the people i know with macbooks never take them from the charger, myself included. the portability is an essential feature when you need it, but when you dont, power consumption is meaningless.
