Oct 19th 2010 4:27PM (TUAW.com)So I'll admit that I'm a nerd. But it's the nerd in me that keeps me away from Android.
See, while open is good for nerds, the only thing most nerds (myself included) hate more than being told what not to do is being out of date, obsolete. And that's where Android's fragmentation is a problem. With my iPhone 3GS, I know that when the next version of iOS comes out, I'll be able to download and install it day 1 (until, of course, the hardware becomes obsolete... but that is always a problem with technology). When iOS 4 came out, I was able to install it at the same time as everyone else. When 4.1 came out, same thing. When 4.2 comes out with all the newest features, I'll be there day 1 with Apple's blessing. If the past is any indication, it'll be the same with iOS 5 (though my phone will be two years old by then and I may not even have it).
But that's not the case with Android. First of all, there are tons of handsets out there now that are running 2.1, 2.0, even 1.6. Which would be fine if I could just update it. But I can't. First I have to wait around for my carrier to decide they're ready, if ever. Sure, I can download Android source from the link in the posted tweet, but what good is it if I try to download it and install it on my phone and my phone ends up bricked? And on top of all this, you still have to worry about unofficial builds not even having access to the Android Market, particularly if it's a tablet. And without access to the Market or running 2.2, how can I supposedly run the coveted Flash that iOS users are locked out of? So much for open.
Look, I love open as much as the next nerd, if not more. But I'll take my closed iOS over the half-baked open that is Android any day. When Android becomes truly open, then we'll talk.
