Quality issues with LG manufactured panels to blame for iPad 2 shortage

May 6th 2011 12:33PM (TUAW.com)
My iPad 2 also has some slight light bleed, but it's not nearly bad enough to warrant having it replaced. Every other product with an LCD that I've ever owned has this issue to a far worse extent, including my late 2008 MacBook.

Nationwide Best Buy iPad 2 promotion begins Sunday, April 17

Apr 17th 2011 12:09PM (TUAW.com)
Same thing at my local Best Buy. Stood in line for 30 minutes, first one in the door... "We don't have any in stock, but we are taking reservations. Could take two weeks to three months to get that."

So much for "minimum stock" and "laws."

It's always something.

Does open matter?

Oct 19th 2010 4:27PM (TUAW.com)
I'll admit. I'm a nerd. In fact, I'm an open source nerd. Before I got my MacBook in October of 2008, I didn't have a computer that didn't have some version of Linux installed. I love open source software, and support it as much as I can. And while I love my MacBook and OS X, there are times that I pine for a good Ubuntu machine. I spent a lot of my college Internet time on Linux boards, and I still miss that. Open source is an integral part of modern computing, and Jobs would do well to recognize that (especially seeing as how OS X is built on the open source BSD).

So I'll admit that I'm a nerd. But it's the nerd in me that keeps me away from Android.

See, while open is good for nerds, the only thing most nerds (myself included) hate more than being told what not to do is being out of date, obsolete. And that's where Android's fragmentation is a problem. With my iPhone 3GS, I know that when the next version of iOS comes out, I'll be able to download and install it day 1 (until, of course, the hardware becomes obsolete... but that is always a problem with technology). When iOS 4 came out, I was able to install it at the same time as everyone else. When 4.1 came out, same thing. When 4.2 comes out with all the newest features, I'll be there day 1 with Apple's blessing. If the past is any indication, it'll be the same with iOS 5 (though my phone will be two years old by then and I may not even have it).

But that's not the case with Android. First of all, there are tons of handsets out there now that are running 2.1, 2.0, even 1.6. Which would be fine if I could just update it. But I can't. First I have to wait around for my carrier to decide they're ready, if ever. Sure, I can download Android source from the link in the posted tweet, but what good is it if I try to download it and install it on my phone and my phone ends up bricked? And on top of all this, you still have to worry about unofficial builds not even having access to the Android Market, particularly if it's a tablet. And without access to the Market or running 2.2, how can I supposedly run the coveted Flash that iOS users are locked out of? So much for open.

Look, I love open as much as the next nerd, if not more. But I'll take my closed iOS over the half-baked open that is Android any day. When Android becomes truly open, then we'll talk.

A handy Safari keyboard shortcut for Google searches

Oct 13th 2010 2:19PM (TUAW.com)
Safari 5 has a snapback feature built into the search bar. It's what the orange back arrow on the right side is. It will immediately take you back to the search page for whatever is typed in the search bar, no matter where you are in the browser.

Mac indie dev asks The Pirate Bay to keep a torrent of his software

Aug 25th 2010 11:38PM (TUAW.com)
This is just an awesome example of reverse psychology, intentional or not. By doing this, not only has he basically guaranteed that this will be posted on the crack's torrent page as a "warning" of sorts for those attempting to download it to see (and thus, dissuade them from downloading it), but there is already at least one person who has read this article that has actually paid for his program because he's now perceived as a "badass." Which of course, means that using this reverse psychology (again, intentional or not) makes him even more of a badass.

Bravo, Dmitry. Bravo.

The Mac is far from dead

@Rafe

I was unaware that iPod Touches and iPads ran Windows. Because that's what Neil was talking about, not "anything besides Mac."

Let's buy an iPad at Walmart

May 13th 2010 8:25PM (TUAW.com)
Hey, there are all the "I don't shop at Wal-Mart cause they're evil and it's the cool thing to do now" comments.

The rest of us that realize that if you only shopped at places that have squeaky-clean reputations and don't care about their bottom line you'd never buy anything from anyone can go on and be ok with this news.

Cue the downvotes in 3...2...1...

Let's buy an iPad at Walmart

I would think a first priority would be to just get the iPad into all the Best Buy stores. When I head to my parents' town, their Best Buy doesn't even carry it because they don't have an Apple department.
