Halo 3 not HD: runs at 640p, pixel counters claim

Sep 28th 2007 1:15PM (Joystiq)
It's hilarious that people think it's even an issue.

When you are on a "Killing Frenzy" and the enemies are jumping down your throat, I highly doubt you'll care about the pixel count. Even in slow-mo in the phenomenal replay mode...I've never noticed a problem.

The game still looks great contrary to whiners' rants. The human faces look like crap, but everything else looks fantastic. With a solid-looking game that runs well and is fun...why waste time counting pixels? If it takes that much effort to discredit the game, then gaming is getting sad.

A grunt. I'd feel guilty for punting it.

No PS3-to-PC play in Unreal Tournament 3

Sep 26th 2007 4:20PM (Joystiq)
While the segregation of console and PC gamers isn't necessarily a good thing, I doubt it would matter all that much.

Although I abhor PC gaming because of my job (too many computers), I'd adventure to say that anyone hardcore about graphics and performance would want a PC rig to play it anyway. The Cell processor may be fancy, but it just doesn't have the access to the amount of memory the PC rigs will have. Plus they can adjust performance settings where the PS3 will not likely be able to. Mouse and keyboard doesn't matter nowadays whether supported or not.

Hopefully PSN isn't as quiet (the players) by the time this game comes out. Then again, I haven't decided whether to buy this for PS3 or wait for the 360 version. I'll probably want to see it in action first.

Croal: Metroid should never have gone 3D

Sep 21st 2007 6:13PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
This line of thinking is just coming from old-timers having trouble adjusting.

I know this because I consider myself an old-timer, since my gaming roots were on the C64 and Atari. For the longest time, I resisted 3D non-RPG games. Example: I can't stand all the new fighting games; I'm a Street Fighter 2/Mortal Kombat veteran. The only 3D fighter that has worked for me is MK: Shaolin Monks since they retained aerial combat (most 3D fighters lost this).

People tried to get me to play Halo and Counterstrike...but I just couldn't handle it...it was too difficult to make sense of direction and get a feel for a distance. In the 2D world...this is much easier albeit limiting.

Anyway, Metroid Prime is what sucked me into FPS games. I came across some gift cards so I bought a Gamecube and MP1. It was difficult at first, but being without the manual aiming mechanic helped me concentrate on getting a feel for virtual 3D space. The exploratory helped also.

After MP, I was able to backtrack and play AVP 1&2, Counterstrike, Halo 1 & 2, and many others that I missed. It really opened up my gaming options, and I'm glad I was able to make the jump. It sounds like Croal needs to do the same.

Now I just need to work on those 3D fighters.

TGS07: Final Fantasy XIII trailer impressions

Sep 20th 2007 1:06PM (Joystiq)
FFXIII is so far the only potential reason to own a PS3. There's that word again...potential. Enough with effing potential...let's see some results.

On the other hand...FFXIII potential conned me into buying a PS3...that collects dust and rots. Is it bad when your friends thank you for buying the PS3 so they didn't waste money on it?

Anyway, after FFX-2, FFXI, and FFXII...Sqeenix owes us. Those last three were below epic gripping standards for FF. They should release the videos...the PS3 needs the hype.

TGS07: Rumbling SIXAXIS accidentally revealed by EA

Sep 19th 2007 7:24PM (Joystiq)
Now that's a good thing to hear. Now if they'd fix those slippery triggers put the left analog opposite of the buttons, the controller would be great.

The controller design is dated; we generally use the left analog stick and the sesame-street-shape-coded buttons the most...so having to move the left thumb down for the main control is silly. In FPS games, thumbs sometimes bump when strafing right and looking left. It'd be easy to fix.

I'd be nice to get rid of the shape designations, too. Saying "triangle triangle cross square" instead of "Y Y A X" seems quite unnecessary.

I want to check out the multiple rumble motors...wasn't there supposed to be 6 little motors instead of 2 big ones? That's where this is supposed to stand out above the competition.

Fanswag: Win (almost) every 360 accessory ever [update 2]

Sep 14th 2007 11:21AM (Joystiq Xbox)
Funny, the only thing I don't have in that set is the wireless adapter (and the awesome case). However, my room mate bought my old 360 (I went Elite), so he could definitely use the stuff!

Here's to hoping!

Consumer price ceiling may be causing PS3 sales slump

Sep 12th 2007 12:16PM (Joystiq Playstation)
The sales would go up, but they won't skyrocket. There's still not enough alluring titles to bring in the masses. They'll come, but it'll still take time.

MGS4 will cause a sales spike as well, but I'm sure we'll see a big one whenever the hell FFXIII comes out. GT5 will definitely make a mark. DMC4 won't hurt either, unless the 360 version is more popular. We'll see I guess.

Xbox 360 Fancast 033 -- "Fanboys" No More

Sep 11th 2007 12:26AM (Joystiq Xbox)
I second that even with owning all three consoles, the Xbox 360 takes the majority of my time. I'll love FFXIII whenever the hell it comes out, but the Wii and PS3 just don't have enough to sustain my attention. I still have yet to play Metroid Prime 3 for more than 20 minutes. The other consoles severely lack content in my opinion.

Interesting discussion. Thanks, guys!

More HDD? Sign me up! My PS3 will weep with envy, and my Wii will continue to be ignorant of its surroundings! *scolds unused consoles*
