Jeri Ryan, Michael Jai White reprise 'Rebirth' roles in Mortal Kombat live-action series

In case noone else did, I'd like to point out that Shahlavi was in the awesome "Ip Man" as a western boxer.

D&D rolls with the changes, ported to Microsoft Surface

Agreed, that dice roll is painfully slow and for no apparent purpose. It also seems odd that you need peripheral control objects. Couldn't different modes be activated with gestures rather than having to have a physical peripheral? Seems like a poor solution for interface.

Neat idea though and a great use of the technology but maybe a few refinements would make it really sweet.

Damn, now we are getting somewhere:

@Sarge: Dude, it IS getting rediculous. You'd think we had something apocryphal like WW2 to get people to sign up and hit the road to good justice, but no... Again that's the "what our military is used for" being a better cause to take up than video games in recruiting. If the mission was awesome and inspiring you'd have tons of people signing up. Right now the sense of duty is taxed to the maximum.

@Singular: I'd always hoped it would be like a game of tribes, *bounce *bounce *pew pew pew! Sadly there was a lot more grit and sweat. And hot. And drinking smelly water.

So the military recruitment shouldn't happen because it's funded by civilians? What parts of the military should not happen because they are funded by civilians? There's dessert in the chow hall, do you oppose that? I know it's not the same, but the idea is that the military spends its budget in the most effective way possible.

At the end of the day, young people are needed in the military (18+). They make good soldiers. Recruiting is necessary. It makes the numbers needed in the military possible.

In your opinion, what should the military be doing to validate its use of taxpayer money?

I don't know where you live but without military intervention, N. Korea would have been able to nuke the west coast or japan already. They may soon, just because our focus has been so far afield for so long. That's just one simple example, but yes, there are countries that would take our lack of military to simply take us over. It's history. There are countless examples.

The question is "What steps have you taken daily to prevent someone from coming and oppressing you" and if the answer is none, then someone else must be. The idea may sound ridiculous, but I am glad it is.

Do you play first person shooters? Are you then advocating that this game type is banned?

@McWilly:

Or they proudly serve their country and live with that pride the rest of their lives, which is also a completely different scenario than you mentioned.

@Dave:

I agree the military isn't used in the right way. It doesn't make that they defend our rights (perhaps the right to exist is already assumed) in the US false. It simply devalues their service because of the misuse of power. I feel that my service was devalued the same way. When I joined soldiers were magical honorable people, now they simply aren't (in the public eye) I'm sure this happened after vietnam too.

As you are asking for military intervention on injustices in your life, what is it that has been done to you? Also, our current CIC is taking a lot of those things to task and a lot is going to shake out from his actions. Hopefully, with the focus on the RIGHT things rather than a different WRONG thing, it will get back to a good balance.

Man... Politics / Video Games a bad mix

@Dave:

Sorry man, it is very realistic. I know respawn isn't an option, but that's what makes it a simulation. The army has no reason to allow soldiers to think combat is a game. It would seriously cause problems.

And no, giving porn and booze to children is not the same. This isn't a vice. This is a needed function of our society. Until a lot happens in the world, the military keeps our nation safe. It's easy to say they don't when you live in a free country with a high standard of living (i know it doesn't seem like it sometimes) but they really do.

@rowd149:

Simulation is a very important part of training. It's knowing what to expect that prevents people from getting killed in a combat situation. Before a solider gets to a combat zone they will have experienced simulated combat in varying degrees in all sorts of simulated warfare. The simulations will range from role play to having live weapons fired at them (a side note, I've never heard D&D players bitch about the Army's use of role play).

A video simulation, like America's Army is exceptionally effectivel in training and demonstrating the usefulness of strict squad tactics, which in turn provides the soldier in the faith in a technique needed to keep ones' head under fire and perform that technique strictly. It's PROVEN to be useful and increase comprehension in the recruits who have played it opposed to those who have not.

Also, in giving the soldier what to expect, America's Army does a bang up job. Have you played that thing? You have to go through training to do anything in that game and it's a big long boring wait through speeches by non-coms explaining the most trivial details of a job. Just like the real thing. Sigh.

First: I'm a combat veteran

I think the protests against Military recruiting are often carried out by people who have not or will not make sacrifices outside of "speaking out in the public forum" against recruiting. I wouldn't want any of these people in charge of the defense of the nation, if they truly believe we do not need a military. I wish we didn't. I would love to see the world embracing peace, but it isn't going to happen because some idiots made themselves feel better by eliminating a recruitment center.

OF COURSE the recruiters are going to use whatever tools they can to sell the best components of the job. The same as any other job. If they said "first we are going to kick your ass for the first 12 months then send you someplace people are constantly going to kill you, you are going to make crappy wage, work your ASS off and you are going to see your friends die and doubt the value of your risks daily."

Nah. Wouldn't work.

It's the same reason the corporate recruiter talks up all the best points of a job, if they said "you are going to get run around by bureaucracy, argue with the stupidest people, watch the attractive yet untalented achieve success effortlessly and generally do nothing to help the world." you wouldn't hire on.

It might be a better use of those protesters time to stay focused on the proper use of our military, rather than the elimination of it. That and their homes and families would be better protected that way.
