Killing us softly with a PS3 song

Feb 25th 2007 1:52PM (Joystiq)
And yet PS3 is still selling better than 360 did in the US first 3 months and that's with 1 game, at $600, with cheaper next-gen competition on the market, and with tons of bad press. So if you're trying to get people to dislike the PS3 you need to try A LOT harder. Now there's good games coming out for it and haters will look even more desperate. If the Playstation brand is dead, then the Xbox brand has been dead for a year.

Ubisoft officialy said Assassin's Creed will have identical AI on both consoles.

Each SPE in Cell has its own 256kb local store and is able to perform independantly for extended cycles. I understand what you mean by juggling seven balls with two hands but it's more like juggling seven balls with two hands on the moon. Some of the "balls" wont come down for 15 minutes at a time (so to speak). Where you say developers can dedicate AI to one CPU for 360, they just dedicate that same AI to one SPE on PS3.

Threads arent used in the same manner on PS3 as 360. With PS3, most tasks are offloaded to the SPEs leaving the threads wide open with virtually no processing being done on the main CPU. That's the main task of the PPE in Cell, identify and export data to the more speed capable SPEs (which it's more than qualified to do).

"Floating point" math plays a very important part in video games. The GPU only draws the polygons and textures, the CPU uses the game physics to tell the GPU what, when, and where to draw. This of course consumes "number crunching" power especially when there's many moving objects on screen (which we'll see more and more of this gen).

PS3 driving Blu-ray movie sales, outpacing HD-DVD

90. alwayzbusi1, it's not only "about improvement not need".
If that were the case the PS1 (1995) would have used DVD (1995) instead of CD (1982) and 100 MHz Pentium (1994) instead of 33 MHz RISC R3000 (1988).

So your argument is that it's not time for an HD game format for an HD game console? When we live in the era of HD cable and HDTV? I don't see your point.

"Size that isn't even needed (now) doesn't matter when price and speed are taking a hit."

One more thing. PS3 loads at 9MBPS and 360 loads on average at about 12MBPS so is 3MBPS worth more than 5X the data? To put this into perspective you're talking about 43 (X360) seconds to load 512MB opposed to 57 seconds (PS3). BluRay games are the same price as DVD games and giving the advantage BluRay holds over DVD I personally feel it's worth the extra $100 or $200 for the console.

(damn again, got cut off) Here's the correct answer. It's an improvement for two reasons. The jump for CD to DVD allowed game developers to further expand (more game data, better audio, better video)games that could not be created on multiple disks. THE MOST IMPORTANT REASON. It also allowed developers to create games that would have been multiple disks, on one disk. A SIMPLE CONVINIANCE. (I would have accepted something to that effect) Before someone says every game can be created on multiple disks, please know that there is such a thing called data relativity. That's when data is dependant on other data (happens a lot in fighting, sports, racing, sandbox, and non-linear games). Example: DOA4 is full of relative data and larger than a CD. For those same reasons, that game is not possible on CD and benefited from DVD. What's the point of this? I was hoping someone would actually see 20+ years of console history's reason of upgrading media through simple logic. It's about improvement not need. MORE GAME DATA, BETTER AUDIO, AND BETTER VIDEO. Now I'm off to GP.

@80

All that typing and you still didn't answer correctly. I didn't ask by what size margin DVD compares to CD. I asked what SPECIFIC advantages DVD gives game developers over CD? Are you retarded? Well are you? Noone has stated the correct answer yet.

Mabe my question was not simple enough. What SPECIFIC advantages does DVD give developers over CD for games? Can someone that disikes BluRay for games give me the correct answer?
