Google Chrome for Mac (finally) gets Extension support

Jan 11th 2010 8:57AM (TUAW.com)
Just because extensions haven't been enabled by default doesn't mean they weren't working… They've worked in Chromium for the Mac for a long time now, simply by setting the '--enable-extensions' (and optionally '--enable-userscripts') flags at startup. Really no giant new step here… Extensions have been working reliably for me for quite some time.

Probably my Casio SK-1. Actually come to think of it, it may still be my favorite toy.

Chrome makes Safari take a back seat

Dec 16th 2009 10:28AM (TUAW.com)
You can enable extensions right now. Open up the Chrome.app package, and change the key 'Executable file' from 'Chromium' to 'Chromium --enable-extensions' and add '--enable-user-scripts' if you want to be able to use those as extensions as well. Also, I don't know if the beta has remote fonts (@font-face) turned on by default, as I've been using the nightlies for a long time, and the beta is just an old nightly… But anyhow you can add '--enable-remote-fonts' if that's not already turned on in the beta. If you're using the nightlies, these seem to stick, I guess a preference gets set somewhere else, because dropping in a new nightly keeps the preferences. Or perhaps it's just that if there's already an extension installed, it automatically enables them? Not positive. Anyhow, upon doing this, most of the Linux extensions seem to work well enough.

Chrome makes Safari take a back seat

Agreed with Joanna. Eight-core Mac Pro here, not some ancient G3 or anything, and Safari is just not stable. It's very quick to render, but throws up a lot of beachballs. I can't remember the last time I was able to quit it properly, always have to force it down. It simply can't handle ~150 tabs the way Chrome can. I wish Chrome used native widgets (especially would appreciate the system-wide dictionary lookup), but in many regards I'm finding it superior to Safari.

Why, another Cinema Display, of course!

Jobs to dev on app name change: "Not that big of a deal."

Nov 20th 2009 9:27AM (TUAW.com)
@sjdvda - Not sure what you're getting at… Danny is right… the word 'app' is possessive, and needs an apostrophe before the 's.' The name belongs to the app, therefore it's possessive, therefore it needs an apostrophe.

Hands-on with the Magic Mouse

Buckingham - Ugh! Set your tracking speed up so you don't have to lift the mouse… Really a much better solution… Magic Mouse fortunately tracks a bit faster than Mighty Mouse as well, Mighty Mouse was never fast enough…

If you really don't think you can adjust to it… Overall Magic Mouse is quite a bit lighter feeling. Unlike Mighty Mouse, you must use two batteries, so you can't lighten it up further. Batteries & therefore weight are still toward the back of Magic Mouse, but are definitely closer to center.

New unibody MacBook loses two ports

Oct 20th 2009 10:59PM (TUAW.com)
Not really. Can't tell you how much work I've been paid for that I did using a combination of Creative Suite, (Final Cut) Production Suite and/or Avid Xpress Pro, and Logic on my first-gen Macbook. They're powerful enough to do it - but without Firewire, it's gonna be a hell of a fight.

Yummy FTP (finally) sees an update

Oct 14th 2009 5:32PM (TUAW.com)
I believe ForkLift also supports multi-threaded transfers…? Just a heads-up for anyone who is interested… ForkLift doesn't get the attention it deserves, in my opinion… Great file browser with great FTP support. That said, I'm still going to look into Yummy because sometimes it's nice to just have a simpler, standalone FTP client (and Cyberduck is slow and awkward!)

Google Chrome browser for Mac coming later this year? You can test it now.

Oct 12th 2009 11:57AM (TUAW.com)
Chrome beta for Mac has been available for a long time now… And test builds of Chromium w/ the UI (and a fancy blue version of the logo) have been available for even longer…
