IGA releases promo vid, claims 36% of gamers seek info from game ads

Apr 21st 2009 2:55AM (Joystiq)
As a developer who works with in-game advertising (of a sort), I can confirm that this is not far off base. Our post-sponsorship polling shows a startling increase in awareness and interest in products. I don't think that the people who fall into the 36% though necessarily fall into the demographics of the users of this site -- understanding of course that hardcore gamers make up a minority in the gamer community, but likely a majority in this site's audience.

NHL 2K8 charges $5 to unlock feature already on game

Plenty of people have already said it here, but I'm going to re-iterate for emphasis:

What difference does it make if it's already on the disc, or if you have to download it? The only difference is the distribution method.

Futurist speculation is both useless and usually incorrect. Every once in a while a person is right by being "before their time" (e.g., Neal Stephenson making the self-fulfilling prophecy of the Metaverse in Snow Crash about 15 years before Second life created something very similar to what he imagined).

Like all the analysts we hear about on Joystiq... do we care?

Flow in Games: an interactive thesis on dynamic difficulty

Me and some coworkers were just discussing this the other day, in regards to Oblivion, which scales enemy difficulty and dungeon rewards to your level.

For a game like Oblivion, it diminishes a lot of the accomplishment -- not because the game is too easy (which it quickly becomes) but because when you level up your character, it almost doesn't matter, because the world levels up with you.

Or freakin' Ikari Warriors - where you could press "ABBA" to bring your guy back over and over again... EXCEPT against the last boss.

Talk about a false sense of security.
