The top 10 most important games
Jul 4th 2006 4:00AM (Joystiq)Wolfenstein created the FPS genre, and with that breakthrough deserves to be on a top 10 list of ground breaking games. Doom was an evolutionary step from Wolfenstein. Interestingly, it was Quake and it's 3D maps which pushed the genre more. (or Descent if you really want to wrestle with 3D maps).
Street Fighter II.
The absence of the fighting genre here is glaring mistake. Street Fighter spawned thousands of copycats, as well as introduced a real "combo" type of input.
Warcraft?
Again, this list lacks a RTS game. With half of korea addicted to RTS, shouldn't the RTS game that broke the mould be in this list? And if Warcraft is too "evolutionary" then something like Populas, or another "god" game should be included.

Breakout, though fun and cloned is nothing more than an evolution of Pong. Even more so, it removes the two player competition componant. on that list, Pong is the only one that pits one person against another.
And Star Wars, for all it's complexities of vector graphics, hardly defined a genre, but again was evolutionary from sprite based racing games, like Pole Position (which could arguably be on this list).
An evolution in advancing technology does not guarantee a game's groundbreaking qualities.
