Rumor: PlayStation Motion Controller to be renamed 'Arc'

Jan 19th 2010 3:30PM (Joystiq)
Geez, I must be the only one who watches motion capture extras on Uncharted 1, and other making of's.

Let's say the balls size dictates depth. How does the system know that I am pointing the controller at the controller with one ball. If there was a ball on the back of remote it would help show the direction it's being tilted. That's why in motion capture movies there is a ball at one end of a stick, and a ball on the back of it. If all the Eyetoy is looking for is one ball, there is no way the Eyetoy can figure out which way you are pointing the ball. I can point the controller straight up, or straight down, it will still see a whole ball.

Now before anyone says, oh the axis inside of it says it's pointed or tilted that way, fine. That still can't help determine without calibration, where I am pointing exactly on the screen. Am I pointing at the top left? Top Right? How does it know? It would need some sort of calibration to know what the center is.

Yes I admit it can follow motion yes, but it needs to know where the middle is, what's high or low. Which it cannot do with on ball in three dimensional space. I'm sorry it can't. Motion tracking is easy. Which way something is point is another.

No I'm saying that I am not exactly hopeful of ANYONES motion controls or alot of tech demos from E3 from any company at this point. That includes Microsoft.

About a week or two later, Microsoft said the Milo demo was setup and only a concept of what they wanted, meaning it was staged.

So when people say, or it worked at E3 for Sony, not exactly excited to hear that either.

"The uniform spherical shape and known size of the light also allows the system to simply determine the controller's distance from the PlayStation Eye through the light's image size, thus enabling the controller's position to be tracked in three dimensions"

Yes your right, that part I figured out is it measures the ball size... I didn't need to read wikipedia for that. But what I want to know is what it's max range then, yeah from two or three feet away I can tell with my eyes something is getting closer or farther based only on it's size... but five or six feet away is another story. That's the reason why humans and most every other animal has two eyes, is for depth perception, to help us know if something is getting closer and farther without having to say "Hey how big is that right now?"

Yeah we also saw a little boy take drawings out of our hand and tell us our name and that we what color clothes we were wearing at E3... am not all that positive and drooling in excitement till real people get their hands on it. Or maybe I'm the only who remembers the exciting and accurate controls of the PS3 game Lair.

And how in the world is this what the Wii should have had from the start? Seems to me the Wiimotion Plus is what the Wii shoulda had from the start. Everything I've heard is the motion control finally works right with Wiimotion Plus, I wouldn't know, I haven't bought Wiisports Resort yet.

Nintendo's answer wasn't to good either... was the best, but not good. Cause normally if you rotate the Wiimote anywhere close to center point, it's hard for the Wiimote to know what direction it's actually facing (or being tilted in) unless the camera in the Wiimote is looking at the sensor bar. That's what Wiimotion Plus was for, if you have two points you then have a line... and a line helps you create direction. It's basic math.

And if you have 6 points you get a pinpoint location and a 7th point creates a point of origin... I learned that from the original Stargate movie.

PSA: Halo Legends 'Origins Part 1' available today only

No cause I can watch video of Ocarina of Time and know what it looks like and enjoy it, I liked Ocarina of Time, thought it was an amazing game and got every stupid little skull spider thing.

I'm talking about the difference between initial screenshots of the anime vs what you actually get. I didn't say the cartoon was bad, just disappointing. I'm not a Halo fan enough to watch it, but am an anime fan... so just wanted to see some classy slick and clean art like this...

Instead... I got something that was very flat colored and didn't look like ANY screenshot you'll find on a Google image search.

Anyone remember when they were a kid, and the intro to a cartoon was awesomely animated and stuff? Then you watch the actual cartoon and the cartoon is no where near the quality of the intro? Same thing.

I've seen images of this and it looked really high production value, and even the image on the X-box Live Network of Cortana looks awesome, so I was expecting some really nice looking anime. But instead, it looked like it was animated by people who made Heavy Metal 25 years ago... it looks like a 25 year old cartoon. Got about 5 minutes in and expectations just got shot.

Finally, a Naruto photo app for DSiWare

Mass Effect 2 cast bolstered by Battlestar, Star Trek actors

I'd like to amend my comment by also saying that in the future, when I have children, I will only tell them there was only one Matrix movie. If after they see the first movie, they ask if there were any other films, I will say no.

I will make sure they never find about the stupidity that was the sequels.
