The processors in a typical desktop pc are x86 and amd64 while the 360 uses a triple core 64bit PPC architecture. So no, a 360 is not internally the same as a desktop pc.

Not in any particular order:

Firefox - Even if it crashes, it will have your tabs and form data saved. Very helpful.

Filezilla - My go to FTP client

GIMP - need to do a lot of image editing

Xchat - Good irc client

K3b - best burning tool I've found, and that's including burner tools for windows

This is why I only buy physical books.
