Verizon FiOS Simulcrypt rollout will break most CableCARD tuners

Aug 16th 2010 11:04PM (Engadget)
Cable companies need to stop using these Cisco/SA set-top boxes if they all suck! My damn SA 8300 PVR won't transfer audio through HDMI so I have to do it through optical to my receiver. SA is shit.

Nokia N8 pre-orders go live in the US, $549 for 'end of September' delivery

Nokia has nothing to worry about. They have Symbian for their low-mid end smartphones, and MeeGo (which is a VERY capable OS) for their high-end devices. Why must every device have Android or iOS to be good? And the N8 is capacitive, and so will every Nokia device following.

Don't forget TRUE free GPS navigation. This means that you don't need to be connected via data to fetch maps since Ovi Maps downloads them from your PC. Trust me, this is an amazing feature for my Nokia N95. I've used the GPS when driving from Canada to the United States and when navigating around Europe with no charges at all. I plan to use it later this month when I go on vacation to Florida. I think the fact that you get a fully-featured GPS with a Nokia phone is a big plus for them.

Everyone always want to live in other places, but when they get there, after a while, they think it's cooler to live somewhere else and want to move there. It's how life works, you want what you can't have, and when you get it, there's something else you want.

ATI CrossFireX versus NVIDIA SLI: performance scaling showdown

Aug 12th 2010 11:04AM (Engadget)
I've always had a good experience with ATi card. They're also much cheaper in comparison to nVIDIA cards. The thing I hate though is that PhysX is exclusively an nVIDIA feature, so when games like Batman: Arkham Asylum or Mirror's Edge utilise the feature, ATi users are left behind.

Google and Verizon publish joint policy proposal for 'an open internet'

Well, I'm not fully familiar with Verizon's business operations since I live in Canada, but I know their main network is like Sprint's, where their devices are only locked to their network and don't provide SIM cards for anyone with an unlocked device.

Hmm... If Verizon believed consumers should be able to choose their devices, why don't they convert from CDMA to GSM so users can truly choose their devices? I mean, you can't just have a philosophy of policy apply only on one specific thing.

It's a good thing though, hopefully this introduces a new wave of companies declaring "an open internet".

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 officially debuts on AT&T: $130 on contract

Checking WikiPedia says that it has 384 MB of memory (which I believe is RAM since the specs don't mention RAM anywhere else). Also, I've heard that this is very hard to put custom ROMs in/I don't think it has been done yet because not many US developers have been working on it since AT&T didn't have the phone until now. Who knows, we might see X10 development rise now that it's introduced to a new market, albeit, a bit late.
