Wii Warm Up: Crossing into 2009

Jan 5th 2009 9:03AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I'm still enjoying reading about my co-writer mum experience of the game. She's up to around six weeks of play and still going strong. The plan is to keep it going for a year:

time will tell.

Wii Warm Up: Did your animals cross?

Dec 12th 2008 9:03AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I had a quick play and I liked it although quite similar to the Gamecube version - no bad thing. My fellow writer at gamepoeple though LOVES it. So much so that she is blogging weekly about her town.

I love that you can wear away animal tracks as you run around your island.

Wii Warm Up: Motion controls ... plus

Jul 15th 2008 8:40AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
My first thought was finally! The almost 1-2-1 controls in Wii-Sports, Boom Blox and Tiger 08 were a real high point of the Wii for me. But even these obviously struggle to get enough information from the controller.

I discussed the benefits of 1-2-1 controls in a We Love Golf review http://www.gamepeople.co.uk/family_wii_welovegolf.htm - a game that side steps the issue.

With the new MotionPlus add on now we can hope for proper direct control of our games. Good on Nintendo for continuing their innovation. And fingers crossed it's not too expensive.

The question is now what is inside it, more accelerometers, gyroscope, pixie dust?

Pretty much the best Wii case mod ever

Nice mod indeed, and with its heart in the right place. And nice diggs for our brave little WiiFanBoy land. Go Hinkle go, go go go!

DS pinball with a twist

Mar 16th 2007 9:21AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
This looks great. I've been a avid fan of the shareware "Visual Pinball Construction Set" (http://www.randydavis.com/vp/intro.htm) on the PC for an age, and it was crying out for a similar release on a handheld.

With all the excitement of sharing homemade Little Big Planets levels, I can see this sort of homemade game sharing really taking off.

Oh, and wasn't 'Home' what Sony called the internet now? *wink*

DS Daily: When did you get on the DS train?

Mar 16th 2007 9:15AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
For me I was in the queue to collect my DS phat on launch day. Although back then it obviously didn't have its phat moniker, as its little brother was but a twinkle in Nintendo's eye.

I remember it well, because I got through 4 DS's until I found one without a dead pixel. Thank god for friendly staff at Game.

Housewife Superstar: home-ec minigames

Mar 6th 2007 2:16PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Nice spot! Its easy to have a knee jerk reaction to games that play to established stereotypes. But, provided there's a decent game behind the clever angle, I'm happy to get stuck in. I'm sure I'll learn a thing or two.

They are of course, leaving room for a sequel: "HouseHusband - Superbloke", or even "HouseGuest - Superstay". *wink*

Okami director not so impressed with Twilight Princess

Mar 6th 2007 2:09PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
It's interesting hearing him comment on Zelda, with Okami being essentially a similar title. As Wolfe said, above, I expect that Wind Waker would have been more his style, with its stylised art direction.

Myself, I think that Zelda is a fine looking piece of work. The whole ensemble really works together, graphics, art and game play. That said, I have been amazed at how much more grunt they seem to be getting out of the PS2 at the end of its life. I saw some "God of War 2" footage the other day, and was blown away.

DS Daily: New horizons

Mar 5th 2007 8:11AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I echo #2, Elite Beat Agents got me tapping along, rhythm action style, in a way I never had before. The tactile experience of a touch interface, the stories and the great art direction are just too much to resist! Here we go!

That said, I'd still like to see genres pushed some more on the DS. A lot of my breakthrough portable gaming moments still hark back to the GBA. The sheer inventiveness of "Wario Ware, Inc: Mega Microgame$" amazed me in a way that the touching and blowing of "Touched" never really did.

I really think there is still some progress to be made in existing genres for our little dual screened friend. I'm sure there are even some all together new game experiences yet to be set free!

DS Daily: Guilty pleasures

Mar 5th 2007 8:03AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I've recently dusted off my copy of a favourite football game of mine. No shame in that, right? Well this wasn't FIFA or Pro Evolution, but Stephen Gerrard's Total Soccer. To further wallow in my shame, it wasn't even on the DS but the GBA.

But, if you'll indulge me for a moment, this apparently mediocre game hides beneath its skin a classic 16 bit football game, 'Kick-off'. For many over-shadowed by Sensible Soccer, this great little game by Dino Dini had a stellar following in Europe.

If you're a fan of the original, join me in my gaming un-shame of finding enjoyment in a great reworking of a classic title.
