Well you'd think ... but I suspect they will do it somehow anyway.
Xbox 360 already uses an "online-only" feature at certain times. For example, if you buy an XBL Arcade game on your 360 and then get a new console, then you can only play the trial version of that Arcade game when you are offline. You have to be online to play the full version.
