Best of the Rest: Andrew's Picks of 2009

Jan 3rd 2010 2:27PM (Joystiq)
Let's see. I really enjoyed the single player in CoD4. Hence, I got MW2 primarily for the single player. It can't be that difficult to understand. MW2's multiplayer is fun, but after playing CoD4 for hours on end, I got bored of it quickly.

Anyway, I completely agree with Andrew about MW2, and I'm glad to see a little bit of respect for Killzone 2.

Infinity Ward pulls 'Fight Against Grenade Spam' ad in light of backlash

Just like you'd think that someone at IW would have realized that the *spoiler* level is in bad taste?

They're really trying to push this game. Nothing inflates your sales like controversy!

New Modern Warfare: Airport Murder Simulator 2 video game glorifies terrorism

Oct 29th 2009 12:15AM (Joystiq)
IW has really taken this too far. I know that there's plenty of other games that let you kill innocents, but this is very different. There's two key words here: Context and realism. Terrorism is a very sensitive subject here in America. The simple fact that you play as a terrorist, "undercover" or not, is pretty despicable. The realism is over the top. I had a hard time watching the video because of all the screaming and struggling.

The presentation of the scene is tasteless. There's many better ways that this could have been portrayed to get you emotionally involved. You could have played a civilian running away, or a security guard, or perhaps the same CIA agent, but dragged through by the terrorists and forced to watch. Activision wants this to be the biggest game of all time. Nothing like a little stirring up a bit of controversy to increase your sales. Disgusting.

What is this nonsense? Post-apocalyptic environments with color? I was under the impression that the apocalypse turns everything gray and brown.

Seriously though, it looks pretty cool. Heavenly Sword was an amazing and under-appreciated gem. This should be a treat.

Bioware wants Dragon Age's user-created PC content on consoles

This is really cool news. Props to Bioware if they can make this work.

Tales of Vesperia demo next week, trailer teases new stuff

I will be very sad if this doesn't come to the US. If it doesn't, I just might actually have to cave in and buy a 360.

BioWare: EA owns Mass Effect IP (Translation: It could still come to PS3) [update]

Jul 8th 2009 2:32PM (Joystiq)
I can see Microsoft throwing a lot of money at BioWare to prevent Mass Effect from being ported. I already have a great PC, so not getting Mass Effect on PS3 makes no difference to me. It would be great if everyone could enjoy what I think is one of the best RPGs ever made though.

No unlockable characters in Tekken 6

Jul 2nd 2009 7:26PM (Joystiq Xbox)
I totally agree. I played RE5 for a good 50-60 hours, mostly just unlocking things. I played local coop in the campaign and mercenaries, but I stayed away from online mulitplayer. I think that Uncharted is a much, much better game, yet I haven't even spent half that time with it. Unlockables give a sense of progression to a game, and they give me a reason to continue playing it, even if it isn't necessarily the greatest game.

Hell, Call of Duty 4 added unlockables to the multiplayer, and it was revered for that. Unlockables are hardly a thing of the past, and I think it's incredibly lame that Tekken 6 will be without it.

That's some pretty good marketing right there.

PSP Brite may lead Sony's fight against piracy, homebrew

Aug 27th 2008 10:45PM (Joystiq Playstation)
This is really sad. I'll have to admit that I love custom firmware for the emulators and games like Cave Story, but its a shame to see this level of piracy. If it means more new games for the PSP, I'd love to see custom firmware gone for good.
