Editor's Lament: Responses to Angry Readers

Aug 16th 2009 12:02AM (Cinematical)
I love this site for my cinema news, first started coming because of the other weblogs sites (engadget, joystiq), and have come to appreciate the writers here as well. It's not an easy job getting traffic to your site in an ever increasingly crowded internet landscape, and I applaud the work done here to keep the site both interesting, entertaining, and factual all at the same time.

While I do somewhat enjoy the "Movies I'll Never See" idea - I'm kind of torn in regards to what to do with it. Again, I know the key of this site is to draw traffic in, and obviously posts like this do just that, negatively or otherwise, people come. I do agree that the post itself on Schindler's List was pretty lame in describing exactly why the critic will never see the movie, other than she thought Speilberg was on a soapbox for 6 or so years. I disagree with the idea some have come up with to expand this to genres, as if that critic will then have to ever review said genre at a later date, they'll get attacked for having a bias.

Having a discussion on this is great to see though, and I think already puts forth the solution - just be aware of what us readers are sensitive to, and keep the discussion open. But I believe you should continue these posts in moderation during the slow news times, and those who aren't interested can skip over them. Continue the great work, and don't get too upset about the superhero bracket - it's been great fun so far!

Joystiq remembers the Sega Genesis

Aug 14th 2009 3:01PM (Joystiq)
Technocop (doo doo doo) Busted!

I mean, come on, when you're 15 years old and you get a game where you can use acid guns to melt the good and bad guys alike, and then it gets banned?!?

But seriously, I remember so much about my Genesis days, it's hard to put in a tiny comment window. There's paying $70 to get Phantasy Star III before the launch - in teen/90s money, that's like, huge! There was teaching my nephew to grow up on the Mortal Kombat blood code and make sure not to go easy on him so he'd be good at video games. There as the hundreds of hockey games where I'd beat my brother and he'd throw the controller at the TV. And then there's Sonic, and Alex Kidd, and compairing it to my best friend's SNES - and it just goes on!

But seriously, Technocop was a fun, horrible game for a teenager to play. :)

Tribeca Review: Outrage

Apr 27th 2009 9:12PM (Cinematical)
While you post a great argument in defense of the politicians, and you definitely hit on some very valid, useful points, there is a bigger difference here. In many states, sodomy laws are still occasionally enforced with regard to gay sex. On top of this, denial of legal equality (devoid of any religious connotation) to a particular minority amounts to denying benefits granted to heterosexuals simply because of ones genes.

In your first example, if the politician was rich, and then yelling for stripping of rights to all rich people, you could understand how both poor and rich people would want to know this information before making an (assumed) intelligent decision on whether this person is mentally fit to lead any group of people. The repression of homosexuals throughout the 1900s is obvious, as even myself as a child of the 80s saw. Since we expect political leaders to be of sound, mental judgment, I think it is important to learn that they are incapable of working through their inaccuracies, when it could (and does) spill into other areas of corruption. If Craig were to have said 'yeah, I had sex with a guy, so what? I occasionally enjoy sex with a guy, but I still think it's wrong for gays to marry!' - then yes, your argument is sound. However, since it is constant denial, constant burying of the skeletons, payoffs, bribes, and other corrupt actions, then it is visibly a mental issue that proves these people are unfit for any form of public office.

My favorite was the post about the engadget mobile/Tmobile debacle - writing about news is one thing, making news yourself, that's just fun.

Rock Band Wii DLC coming 'as early in 2009 as possible'

Jan 4th 2009 10:00AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I know it's been said before way too many times, but as an owner of both the 360 and the Wii, I just don't understand how the Wii DLC will work with their horrible idea of using SD cards. Right now, my DLC on the 360 takes up 12 gigs of space, and some of the packs/albums are 600+megs. I wish Nintendo would stop ignoring the fact that we need a real storage solution on the Wii immediately, as it'll be a major pain for real RB fanatics, and eventually GHWT, and any other game with serious DLC (as a lot are trending that way these days) on the Wii.
