Swag Saturday: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (360/PS3) [update]

Aug 2nd 2009 3:56AM (Joystiq)
I'd transform into Sega, so I can announce the triumphant return of Sonic the Hedgehog as a bad-ass bionic, mutated, elastic armed, pistol weilding, anti-hero. No more of that pesky speed or side scrolling that so cluttered the early days of Sonic!

Major Nelson: Xbox 360 guide faster after next update

I'd like more diverse codec support for video playback, I've got a ton of videos and some of them just wont work, and I have to resort to slow on-the-fly encoding, which is pretty contradictory, and hardly works.

Maybe the ability to browse netflix movies on the 360 and watch them on the fly, it's not fun to run back and forth between two rooms adding movies to the queue, then going to watch them. It's really a nitpick, but it'd be nice.

More customization for your theme, not just changing the background picture to some jpeg you've got on a thumb drive, but changing the icon set for your visual friends list.

The reduced price of premium themes. Not that they're expensive, but it's such a a god awful odd number. In terms of points it's good and round, but 250 points comes to $3.12, almost nothing is worth 50 points, so you'll always have this wasted amount, even if it's tiny. The changing of points to dollar value for on demand games is essentially what I want, as long as they also allow you to buy as many, or as few points as you want after that.

Although I know it's not happening, the increased support of original Xbox games, and more being put up for download. They say that they're phasing out the Xbox originals, but how do we know they're not just being rolled into the same category as games on demand? A guy can hope...

Joystiq turns 5, you get the presents! Win inFamous & Prototype on PS3

Jun 20th 2009 11:31PM (Joystiq)
I first started reading just about a year ago, maybe a year and a half. I love the site, love the features, but I don't love how you guys quit updating so early, around 8pm central time. I'm up all through the night and compulsively refresh Joystiq, and Kotaku hoping for new updates. After about 20 minutes, I finally realize nothing is going to happen, and find something else to do.

New SCEE head thinks Wii owners will eventually 'upgrade' to PS3

Jun 9th 2009 4:46PM (Joystiq)
I don't understand the leap in logic here. From a Wii to a PS3? Even if they're hardcore and have stuck with the Wii for pricing reasons, why would they go to the most expensive system available? I could see once blu-ray really catches on, the person happens to not own a blu-ray player, it could be cheaper to buy a PS3 over a 360 and a blu-ray player separately. If a blu-ray player is around 200$, the PS3 around 400$, you're getting what you want, plus a game console for 200$, just the same price of a 360 arcade. Instead of a memory card, you get the big-ass 80gb hard drive though, so I guess it's up to the person buying and what they want. Don't want a blu-ray player yet? 360 would be the way to go, unless you've really got a hankering for a few specific PS3 games.

Seen@E3: Protesting Dante's Inferno

I think this is almost worse then the "Rapelay" thing, where the three-ish year old game was banned. The game is based(loosely) around a poem that's hundreds of years old, but now that it's a video game it's too far? Why didn't anyone flip out over God of War where you take a visit to Hades, which is essentially hell. Or Devil May Cry, where each game you take a visit to the "demon world", which is basically hell, again. You can never tell with the crazies and why they latch onto one thing over another.

LGJ: Supreme Court Decision Doesn't Bode Well

While I do see the point that there is potential for the censorship to bleed over into gaming in general, I believe the opposite. As the ability to interact and modify broadcasts becomes more complex, it could be possible for someone to alter the level of content they wish to see. This is already here in the form of a comparatively primitive "V-Chip", that simply blocks shows over a specific rating.

As the technology ladder climbs though, who is to say we wont be able to simply press a button, and your episode of CSI has it's blood censored out? And any swearing has been dubbed over with less expletive? Gears of War 2 did this in a way, with the ability to turn off gore all together, and to change any swearing into something more appropriate. The wave of technology could make it so those who wish can view regular broadcast TV without having the writers have to dance around swear words and hide nudity.

What does worry me though is the possibility that the government and FCC could take the reins of the technology and censor out anything they wish, from swearing to nudity to even dissenting opinions, although that's worst-case scenario. What I'm trying to say is that while there is the possibility that it could bleed over into games in a negative fashion, it's also possible that it could be a big step forward for freedom of all speech, expletive or otherwise, on regular broadcast television. Even gaming may benefit where a game may receive a range of ratings with the parent able to modify blood, gore, sexual scenes, but for those who want them there, they'll be there.

I sure would have liked to see Arrested Development without the censorship of swearing, although they did base an episode around the ridiculousness of the censorship...

I wish I could go :(

Really though, I wish the slim-line PS3 is real, it includes full hardware backwards compatibility due to the cheaper price of the older PS2 chips. Oh, and it comes bundled with God of War 3. I'd buy that in a heartbeat, but refuse to abandon my big blocky PS2, but with a hardware PS3 I'd have no qualms throwing it to the wolves...or in storage.
