Reviews will always do us a disservice if they are always written by those who "like that sort of game". What if I intrinsically don't like "that sort of game"? What if the title in question actually breaks the mold "that sort of game" has built and can bring in gamers who previously didn't like the format?
Everyone who wrote a NWN2 review enjoyed the NWN style. That doesn't tell anything to those who find the JRPG enjoyable or the open-ended Oblivion style enjoyable. Great, the guy who liked D&D rule inspired games likes NWN2. That tells me nothing.
The 1UP review was far more informative to someone who doesn't find that type of game to be their cup of tea. Now those readers know, "Well, this guy liked Oblivion, I liked Oblivion. This guy doesn't normally like the restrictive D&D universe rules, and neither do I, so now I know not to get this game."
Oh well, all we can look forward to in reviews of NWN2 are the fans preaching to the choir. Reviews are meant to tell the opinions of one person so others can use it to determine if they want the game or not. Reviews are not meant to confirm the opinion of someone who already bought it and wants to feel good about their purchase.
I'm with Uh_oh on this. Any serious PC gamer knows they can not only build a better system than any existing manufacturer can produce, but can build it for much less. There isn't any reason to pay the 100+% markups these guys are charging. I'm sure the average guy would be willing to save $500 or more if they learn it only takes an hour to get a system from scratch to running.
I think he is saying that the PS3 can't perform up to what it is being hyped to be. Yes, the PS3 has an incredible processor, but he is saying the supporting cast will make sure a good chunk of that processor goes unused.
Building a game console is like building a good American football team. Each component is a position. Imagine the Cell processor as the quarterback, BluRay as the running back, and the rest of the machine as the offensive line and recieving squad.
The Cell processor is Peyton Manning. BluRay is LaDainian Tomlinson. Great players in their own right and they can do a lot of damage to the other team. However, when the rest of the team is the Arizona Cardinals, even Manning and Tomlinson can't get them to the playoffs.
That is what this guy is saying. The PS3 has a beastly processor and a ton of storage space, but the rest of the machine is inferior to the 360. The 360 is more of a well balanced team where individual components don't need to hold up the workload another component is lacking.
People are already buying gamer scores on Ebay, so why shouldn't EA and others trump them and make the money themselves? Let EA sell gamer score unlocks, secrets, and all the other goodies many of us enjoy looking for. Some folks find more fun by pretending to be important via what they do in video games.
I also like how it has a finite ending. It could have been much worse. The comic could have drug on and on well beyond the point of it being any good or it could have been like a former favorite, RPG World Comic, that just stopped, was promised an ending, and never materialized. Concerned had a good run and an acceptable end.
In this case, yes. GameStop, EB, and all other pre-order outlets are not overselling their allotment. There are roughly the same number of PS3s hitting the US market this launch as the 360 did at its launch, yet PS3 preorders are drastically smaller. 20 360 preorders vs 2 PS3 preorders.
Preorder PS3s are going to make it into consumer hands on Nov 17. We have no idea when voucher PS3s will arrive, or even if they are considered priority, meaning voucher holders may not get theirs until retailers are fully stocked.
