Microsoft, Companions in Courage partner to bring Xbox Live to children's hospitals

Apr 23rd 2008 3:51PM (Joystiq)
"...will allow children to play games and chat with each other across a private "safety-enhanced" flavor of Xbox Live"

It appears as though the kiosks will connect to a private version of Live... so there is no concern about trash talking with non-hospitalized (and often vulgar) children.

kudos to MS!

GDC08: PhyreEngine, Sony's new (free!) cross-platform engine

There is some major mis-information here. Proabably because none of you are actual developers with any experience on this hardware.

1. The Xbox 360 has 3 general purpose Power cores, each clocked at 3.2 Ghz. The PS3 has 1 general purpose core + 6 DSPs (actually called SPEs, but it is very important to highlight the DSP nature of these).

2. Each PS3 DSP has a very small local memory (*NOT* a cache - you must manually reserve this)

3. Each core in the Xbox 360 supports 2 hyper-threads. Whoever said that "only 1 thread can run at a time while the others sit in reservation" was out of their mind. Each core has TWO fetch operators, meaning BOTH threads can request memory at the *SAME* time.

4. Hyper-threading is NOT the same as having 6 cores, but it is way better than having only three.

5. Unified memory architecture means you're going to pay a penalty for L2 cache misses. On the other hand, having a unified system saves you the bandwidth of having to constantly shuffle resources back and forth. If you have an SPE generating geometry, you have to shuttle that from local memory to either system or video memory, etc.

6. The PS3 has barely enough backend bandwidth (think fillrate) to supply current gen games. The Xbox 360 has a fast link of 256 GBps to its local eDRAM.

7. I could go on, and on, and on.. but the point is, both machines are powerful - they are more than powerful enough to meet the demands of current gen games.

Nuff said :)

Capcom addresses DMC4 install complaints

Feb 5th 2008 1:10PM (Joystiq)
Wait, so does the Xbox 360 version of the game also require the install? Or is it just the PS3? I'm confused... but if this is only a PS3 issue, I will be purchasing the game to run on my 360 for sure

Tretton financial math: New PS3 + PS2 < Old PS3

Oct 18th 2007 4:38PM (Joystiq)
This is absolutely ridiculous... I can't believe what I'm hearing. Users like Vikiculous are actually SCOLDING the consumer for trusting Sony! Lolmaoz.

The fact is, at E3 2005 Sony proclaimed BC as the platform differentiator (back when they had doubts about the 360's BC). They preached incessantly about the importance of back-compat and attempted to play on the nostagia of gamers worldwide.

The fact that their engineers could not get BC stabilized for a decent price (in software even, lol), is a HUGE issue. It is a sign of Sony's sloppy misguided efforts this generation.

A note to all consumers: NEVER forget what you were promised, and above all, hold corporations accountable when they renig on a promise.

So far, we have been doing a pretty good job of this. Microsoft was punished for their hardware malfunctions and paid for it with 1.15 billion dollars. Sony is being held accountable for a number of flat out lies, which I will recount for the memory-impaired. They are being held accountable by poor sales (Wii at 11M, 360 at 11M, PS3... 4M ftw...).

* BC was promised for all SKUs. Whether or not you even care to purchase a PS3, this is a telling sign for investors (that we do in fact care about).

* 2 HDMI Ports (where did those go?)

* Timely release (hmm... the 360 missed their projected launch date by TWO DAYS... Nov 17th rather than the 15th... Sony missed their launch by 6+ months...)

* Rumble. There was a time when rumble was promised. It was circa E3 2005.

* Hardware specs. Sony's fuzzy math created a massive cloud of confusion surrounding the hardware issue. The reality is, it is under-powered and over-complicated.

* Killzone 2. Need I say more?

Feel free to pick apart my post, determine what you deem to be inaccuracies, but the reality is, the consumer is not fooled. The PS3 sales are dismal, as the stock continues to be downgraded. Sony has fallen very far, and the only people who don't see it are either Sony employees or fanboys. Either way, you deserve our pity. Here is hoping that the managers at Sony Corp get their act together and resurrect the magnificent company of the 90s.

If you remember only one thing from my post, remember... NEVER forget what you were promised, and above all, hold corporations accountable when they renig on a promise.

Never allow yourselves to be convinced that the shit in the soup tastes better than what it really is.

Japanese hardware sales, May 28 - Jun. 3: Custom excuse edition

Does anyone, like, actually care about the japanese hardware sales? Where are the real figures we care about, like the NA and EUR sales?? Do you have to pay for that or something? :)
