Redbox expands game rental program to Orlando

May 27th 2010 12:55PM (Joystiq)
Eh, I sent in this tip a month or so ago after I got an email from Redbox about it, but I guess you guys missed it.

Either way, it's not that hot right now around East Orlando from my experience. I visited the one near my local 7-11 a week ago and all they had was a copy of God of War III. I was hoping for Alan Wake, but I guess I wasn't that lucky.

For a game like this, any troublesome bug is likely to sour a lot of users. It's surprising that big bugs like this can still fall through the cracks nonetheless.

FTC commends ESRB and gaming industry for self-regulation practices

@johnson412: Totally right about that. Regardless of how successful a ratings system might be, uninformed parents are usually the bigger problem in the scheme of things. I think what John Davison did with What The Play? was a good step in the right direction and it'll definitely be interesting to see how the video game industry goes in terms of education as the medium gains more and more traction as a legitimate form of entertainment.

Saying that there are "better causes out there" is a pretty lazy way to go about charity. The truth is, Penny Arcade is doing a great thing. Sure, you can donate your money to the American Cancer Society, but why not just do both? I have no problem donating a fair amount of money to every charity that I think deserves my hard-earned cash; there's no need to pick favorites when you're being charitable, because every little bit helps.

Entelligence: Have we demonized DRM?

@BigD145: Maybe you should try reading. Dan said that if the servers go down and you lose authentication, chances are you can crack your install because Steam won't suddenly vacuum up all of your files. He never said that you should try cracking games on Steam right now.

Entelligence: Have we demonized DRM?

benjiro, you completely missed my point. I'm not saying that the actual DRM that Valve uses for Steam is somehow better than the DRM that Apple or Amazon uses nor am I saying that Valve is promising anything to buyers if their authentication servers go down. My only point was that DRM is far more palatable to consumers when there are counterbalances that make the value proposition good enough regardless of the fact that you're only licensing these digitally purchased products. While the accessibility is only as good as the condition of Valve's servers, Valve gives you the ability to install games on potentially unlimited machines, giving more accessibility in the meantime. They also provide good deals in oft-recurring sales on almost all of the products they offer (eventually).

And for the record, while I'm not gullible or arrogant enough to assert that I represent all consumers, I can safely say that I've purchased over 90 titles from Steam with no notable complaints. I've enjoyed the fact that I can install all of the Popcap games I bought on there on not only my machine, but the family machine and my netbook. I've saved hundreds of dollars on games that I was planning on buying and saw on sale in Steam's marketplace. I'm not proof positive, but I certainly am satisfied.
