A color Kindle is years away, buyers remorse here to stay

May 29th 2009 9:16AM (Engadget)
I'd be happy enough if the Kindle 3 had a freaking backlight.

Nintendo 64 system: $25.95

With aging gamers and more gaming parents kids these days could have it good. Since mom or dad may want the latest and greatest and so long as they can share, Jr will get the benefit of current gen gaming.

If your going a gen or so behind, I'd advocate for the Ps2 or Xbox since they seem to have the movie tie in games many kids find fascinating for 15 minutes.

Tax Tips: Can I deduct my cash donation to a charity?

Mar 11th 2008 9:28PM (WalletPop)
Many organizations, like the one I work for include the standard tax blurb on your thank you note. If you get one after you donate you may want to hang on to it.

Alternatively I believe charitable orgs are required to send a tax statement to anyone who gives over $250 in a calendar year.

We will also provide a tax statement to any donor who emails/calls/stops in. If you feel you need a receipt ask for one next time you donate.

Great Advice!

High-tech coupon clipping: Playing the Grocery Game

Mar 11th 2008 9:23PM (WalletPop)
Rather than spending loads of time clipping I go for simplicity. I clip from my in-laws Saturday paper (coup's a day ahead since we have no local Sunday edition) and print out more from another local paper's site. I assume others may have a local version but I go to www.toledoblade.com once my list is made up and spend 5 minutes browsing through their coupons. I'll print anything on my list and any staple items I'll need for the next week.

This process for me at least minimizes my time as well as maximizing the actual use of coupons since I don't need to sort through a box of 78 to find the 4 I need this week.

I have been tempted by the Grocery Game before but I am hesitant to spend money to save money. Maybe I'll give it a go in the near future.

Five tips toward happier dealings with U-Haul

Mar 11th 2008 9:14PM (WalletPop)
Similar to makvato:

Call Penske! Having ran a small moving and storage business for college students we relied on rental trucks and anytime we touched U-Haul the truck and service was awful and the local dealer tried to add on misc. fees.

After our second rental at Penske we got red carpet treatment. Our level of service didn't even warrant it since we only rented 6-8 times per year.

Postal Service teams up with HBO to promote letter-writing

Mar 11th 2008 9:08PM (WalletPop)
I'll split the difference and use my tablet to send handwritten emails!

Seriously though John raises an interesting point regarding passing down history through letters. I remember having loads of honest to God letters which I sent to my wife when we were first dating and I am sure they are in a shoebox in our closet.

One of the collections I will leave behind are digital photos, which do tell somewhat of a story.

No one shows up for foreclosure auctions

Mar 6th 2008 11:32AM (WalletPop)
Foreclosures are interesting to me as an individual casually looking for a house. The local Sheriff runs the auctions but you often can't get an inside look at the house before bidding which means I'll never purchase one. It'd be nice if they offered a limited viewing days c/o a local Realtor.
