Joystiq Review: Killzone 2 (single player)
Feb 2nd 2009 8:08PM (Joystiq)Welcome to the genre!
Now, if it's polished it to a new level, balanced well, plays well, has excellent atmosphere and graphics.. AND a consistent and pretty original art direction (which it certainly DOES have, if you have any sort of eye for aesthetics, KZ2 is very interesting on an artistic level).. All the reviews (other than this one) have waxed lyrical about the amazing surround sound too..
Originality isn't everything. Gimmicks REALLY aren't everything. I cant think of a single iconic FPS which has a gameplay gimmick! I think gimmick and Haze, Timeshift and Fracture come to mind..
I think quality and HalfLife, Halo and Timesplitters2 come to mind. Gimmickless gameplay, but I'd certainly rather have KZ2 rub shoulders with them than the "original" titles.
Sony Europe says Home will be 'a system seller'
Dec 15th 2008 10:37PM (Joystiq Playstation)It's not a dolls house for boys any more than Oblivion is a wardrobe simulator for medieval looking guys - you're taking a tiny part of the home experience and making it out to be the whole thing.
Achievements and trophies are super fake. That "trophy" is a collection of pixels. People still collect them. There's no difference. Dolls houses equally about collection - you still likely have the same mindset with different window-dressing. Half of the stuff you can get in home you unlock by playing the games inside Home..
Nobody's trying to pretend the world in Home is better, everyone I've met is intelligent enough to see it as part of this world. It's not a roleplay to most people. It's a networking tool.

Dec 15th 2008 10:23PM (Joystiq Playstation)My gut feeling may be wrong but I really do think the stink you guys are kicking up is going to blow back right into your faces.
Sony Europe says Home will be 'a system seller'
Dec 15th 2008 10:20PM (Joystiq Playstation)Why would I use Home when I can just use IM? Why would I use IM when I can just use IRC? Why would I use IRC when I could just use email? Why would I use email when I could just use real mail?
That's too linear a progression, but even so - each of the systems mentioned above has is own advantages.
Home is already showing its potential in the friendships and communication it's facilitating. It's a really good networking tool. It depends on people. The potential is similar to when the Web wasn't so full..
What do you expect Home to do for you? It's going to be an excellent framework for programmers to make small games and have them distributed in a fun, low risk way.. It's a great place for people to advertise.. It can, and will bring more gamers to the PS3. It absolutely WILL, no question. Girl gamers, casual gamers. Older gamers who just want to chill and socialise and not be shouted at by a load of XBL style kids. I've seen all these groups in home and on the forum and they're all making it their own.
The other consoles dont give the community much in terms of ownership. Yes it's all still sony's but this is much more tangible and will give a lot of people a greater emotional attachment to their PS3 and Sony brands.
The hardcore did all this hating on the Wii, and look how that's doing now. The difference is that Home doesn't completely isolate the hardcore, and will cater for them quite nicely.
In depth enough?
When the iPod was first announced millions of people went "meh! it plays music, I can already do that! This is a huge waste of time! They should be working on their core business!!" ;)

Dec 15th 2008 10:05PM (Joystiq Playstation)They're obviously looking into PSP integration too.
Sofar ive made good friends with lots of common interests in ways much easier than any other platform ive encountered.. I think if people actually studied the way the real (non abusive/dossing) home users interact with each other they'd see a much more positive thing. It's already showing its potential.
So you went Home ... (now what?)
Dec 14th 2008 9:29PM (Joystiq Playstation)I don't think Sony are copying MS by making a 3D chat framework.. MS have nothing like this and Home's been in development for quite some time! 12 year old annoying kids are already omnipresent in gaming so it's not changed anything on that front.
i've made a lot of good friends on Home in the short time ive used it (i was a closed beta tester too) - a lot of people want this interface, it can actually bring new people a lot closer together.
I'm really impressed with how Sony are branching out and gambling on things. They ARE being an innovative leader here.. They're just not on such a good footing to make such gambles because of the PS3's justifiable pricepoint and the 360's head start. They're the only one of the big 3 doing any interesting experimentation on a software level. Home isn't a gimmick..
Sony's eccentric hair-brained seeming schemes are the main reason I love the company. They're trying something unusual here, people should give them a little slack!
All the negativity reminds me of people's reactions to the iPod when that first came out. "Nobody wants this! I can already do all this stuff!".. Yeah. Of course you can. Yes you can talk on the web or IM. You can play games on your PC too, why do we need consoles at all?
You'll see.. I'd put money on big things here. :) Most of my friends list goes in a lot.. All of the beta and stress test people ive met spend quite a lot of time using it.. Nothing was forcing them. Less than a week since Open beta. It's going to be massive..
Philosony: Give a sackboy a level and he'll play for a day...
Dec 14th 2008 12:36PM (Joystiq Playstation)LBP has been a lot of fun for me while ive had time to play it. I'm loving this hardware generation - Sony seem to be doing everything they can to publish really weird games which may or may not appeal to broad audiences (a big gamble) but are absolute god-sends to a select few.
Joystiq hands-on: Killzone 2 single-player campaign
Dec 4th 2008 11:52PM (Joystiq)A game's quality is more important to the people who buy it than it's sales, and maybe people will buy into realistic mechanics anyway.. It may be unusual but if it ends up capturing people's imaginations it might do really well.
Hands on with Killzone 2's single player campaign
Dec 4th 2008 10:03PM (Joystiq Playstation)They've already said they're making timesplitters 4.. Killzone wasn't a failure, it was a decent game and sold okay.
