Motivation to teach your children geography (video)

Dec 1st 2007 8:03PM (ParentDish)
I didn't know Budapest was the capital of Hungary, but I did know that Europe's not a country and France is...

Isn't that Kellie Pickler that was on American Idol?

What do you listen to?

I like using pandora.com. You can put together a station from groups you like, then usually find some others you'll like that are similar or similar enough.

Fake priest baptizes baby, gets arrested

Jun 25th 2007 5:42PM (ParentDish)
What Sandyone said about anyone being able to baptize someone is true. While preparing for our child's baptism, our priest told us we could do this in an emergency if our child had not been baptized.

Boy Scount leaders spend big at Key West resort

Jun 15th 2007 1:20PM (ParentDish)
I agree completely with Justin's comments.

As an Eagle Scout, one of the things I am most looking forward to is scouting with my son (hopefully he wants to be a Boy Scout).

The organization is a lot bigger than 32 people. To say "To be honest, with press like this, it's hard to believe the organization is doing as well as it is" is ignorant. Millions of boys are influenced by millions of adult leaders. The number of adults involved in controversies such as this is not even a measurable percentage of the excellent adult leaders teaching these boys and young men how to be the leaders of their generation. I am sure a child is much more likely to be misguided by his own parents than by his adult leaders in Boy Scouts.

The ten best knots

Jun 12th 2007 2:25PM (ParentDish)
Having spent 12 years in Cub Scouts/Boy Scouts, I learned lots of knots. Of course, I only remember the 3 I ever use. Well, 2 I use, and the 3rd because it's easy.

My favorite I don't remember was the one you could tie around your waste with one hand while hanging from a cliff. I always wanted to try it while hanging from a cliff. Probably good I didn't, because I never remember it.

Knowing the square knot actually helped me figure out I was tying my shoes wrong. I was actually using the granny knot, and my shoes came untied all the time. Once I changed which way the rabbit ran around the bush, my shoes never came untied!

This is why I hate amusement parks

At least you'll let other people introduce her to roller coasters. My sister-in-law hates roller coasters, and won't let anyone take her son on them. Even though he really wants to go, and lives 10 minutes away from some of the top rated coasters in the world.

The first time I read about Pleo was in Wired. I so want one!

Finding the Perfect Jogging Stroller

Jun 7th 2007 12:27PM (ParentDish)
I've wanted a jogging stroller since we found out my wife was pregnant. (Which happened a few weeks after I started running seriously... can running improve your sperm count?) My wife swore we would never own a jogging stroller. "They are so ugly!"

Now that my wife has had our son and has started running with me, guess who wants a jogging stroller!

Back when I was looking, the only advice I found was what you said, that you shouldn't use a jogging stroller until the child can hold their head up on their own. Until then, I lock the front wheels of our "Cadillac stroller" so they don't turn. I figure for the short distances and slow speeds we're running right now, it should be okay. Nothing has fallen off the stroller, yet...

Subskate -- any good?

Jun 5th 2007 12:48PM (ParentDish)
We always used another person for the underwater skateboard/surfboard. It was/is usually me, because I can hold my breath longer...

Also, to echo Keri, diving sticks and water balls are the best. Especially if you want you kids to socialize in the pool. I made countless friends as a kid, because I had diving sticks and balls to throw around.

I can't wait to take my son swimming...
