PlayStation 3 Gets 3-D Blu-ray and YouTube Support in September

Jul 14th 2010 11:55AM (Switched)
I'm confused. I'd read yesterday that a EU Sony rep stated that 3-D movie support was scheduled for September and 3-D picture support as well as YouTube 3-D videoclip was in the pipeline (No scheduled date but coming).

H.264 encoder coming to PS3

The "Flush" memory is flash memory and there is a flavor of Linux that image boots from a USB flash drive. You do NOT have to install Linux to the PS3 or format your PS3 HD.

I would guess the program is included as part of the Linux image and the file to be compressed is sent to the PS3 and returned to the PC when finished.

This then just requires plugging in the usb flash drive-booting the PS3 and then running the program on the PC. The PC program then treats the PS3 as a super-computing accessory.

If Sony does a good job this will take off, if they don't it will just be a bandwidth waste. I can see possiblities for lots of business. Virtual Pizza Hut where you can go in and see the pizza you are ordering. Hotels that offer a preview of their rooms and beach views (I'm in Sarasota, Fl and that's our special draw).

Drawbacks: bandwidth of the internet, clumsy interface (joystick and typing), consumer education.

Tagging an internet camera so that it is the picture seen in your virtual home window would be a nice feature. Framerate can be limited as needed.

Encyclopedia for children. Medical reference doctors office are just some of the off hand thoughts.

This is the future of the information age. How many grandparents would like to video conference with their grandkids but it is too hard to do. (I know it's easy for us). The PS3 has a console beep. That should be enabled for a request for video chat. There should be a standby mode that allows detection of the above and a beep to the console.

HD TVs and LCD panels are part of the necessary support for home to evolve. A wider acceptance of a standard like home which at this time requires a PS3 or better because of the features it gives the consumer who can't use a computer. Picture mail, home automation, media server, home alarm, remote access to media and home security. can go on and on. Most of this is built into the Sony. I wonder why
