Tour the Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet in this new trailer

Jun 7th 2011 12:23PM (Joystiq)
I've been looking forward to this game for so long. Gagne, the developer, is a former animator at Pixar (and the Iron Giant, which explains why the games artistic direction is so great. The demo I played at PAX East felt sort of like Pixel Junk shooter with some added Metroid-vania 'explore and collect upgrades' elements. And Gagne said it would easily be a 10+ hour experience.

@derdaim
I talked to Gagne at PAX and he all but said it would be heading to other platforms after a period of exclusivity on XBLA.

The Witcher 2 review: Taught with peril

May 31st 2011 3:56PM (Joystiq)
A thoroughly excellent review and I've seen a lot of bad ones for this game (one was practically half poorly written fan fiction). It's a game that expects a little more investment from the player than some recent games (cough, Dragon Age 2 cough) but that also means it doesn't treat the player like some blithering idiot in need of a bread crumb trail.

Also, "The Witcher 2 is polished for the most part and Polish throughout," gave me a satisfying chuckle.

Crysis 2 can run on a $600 PC

You want to be able to play Battlefield 4 six years from now at acceptable graphics without an upgrade? That's practically like asking the the PS3 to play PS4 games six years from now.

If you do your research and build it right, you can get a ton of value out of a PC, even creating a simple upgrade path (like going from one to two graphics cards). But unless you are thinking of spending $3000+ for a pre-built machine, it's really hard to think it would play some potential game 6 six years from now with acceptable frames rates/resolutions.

Battlefield 3 to have dedicated servers, leading on PC

@xreadmore
All your points are valid in some sense, but I'd disagree in parts (and I love playing on both my PC and Xbox 360).
1) What PointlessPuppies said
2) Sort of true. But if you can build a PC like I did with the idea of slowly and cheaply upgrading it. I bought an easily overclockable processor. All I have to do is buy a nicer heatsink (and I enjoy techiness of installing something like that). I also have a motherboard and PSU that can handle a second graphics card. I bought one graphics card to start for about $160 and when I decide I really need to upgrade, It'll probably be less than $100 (it's already about $130). Even so, my 8 month old budget build ($700) hasn't yet met a game it can't run smoothly at full or near full settings. Considering a console requires a big HDTV, I'd say that comes pretty close to the same price overall.
3-5) Completely true, if your friends are on Xbox live of course it'll be more fun. My friends are on PC so that's a more fun social scene for me. But I still enjoy playing a lot of single player Xbox 360 games. I think the Steam friends list kind of makes it hard to say you can't be social on the PC. Plus, you don't have to pay an extra $30-$60 a year like you do for Xbox Live.
6) This is still somewhat true, I had a hell of a time getting Dragon Age to run on my 64 bit system for some reason. But don't pretend the Xbox 360 (and even the PS3) are as reliable as the PS2 and Gamecube were. At least for the most part I can fix my PC's problems; I'm forced to wait and sometimes even pay Microsoft to fix my Xbox's problems. Still, I won't pretend like you don't have to work a little harder to get games working on the PC.

If you prefer a controller to Keyboard/mouse, thats fine. I think it depends on the game; Gears of War feels better on a gamepad while Valve games feel better with a mouse and keyboard. Of course I play console games when my friends are at my place, but we play PC games together when they aren't.

I don't write this with snide condescension for consoles but rather to highlight what makes the PC great. Its' the games it has that just don't work on consoles, like The Witcher, Amnesia: Dark Descent, pretty much all RTS games, large scale multiplayer shooters like Battlefield 2, King's Bounty, Stalker, and hundreds of indie games that never make it to consoles. Seriously, don't give up on PC gaming.

"such as the lasers on a Cylon Raider"

Am I the only one who doesn't remember ANY lasers on ANYTHING in the ENTIRE show? And while I'd agree it was the drama, politics and characters that made fans come back each week, the coolest part about the space battles were that they weren't just a bunch of flashy lasers and photon torpedoes, they were about massive cannons, missiles, machine guns, and even nukes.

New MAG gametype and maps coming in 'Interdiction' DLC on June 22

I really don't understand this "It needs a single player mode" before I'll buy it mentality. Sure, it would be nice if it had a 8 - 10 guided single player experience, but compared to the 50+ hours I've put into the game, playing with my friends and enjoying it more than practically any other console multiplayer shooter this generation, I think I'm happy with just a really great multi-player experience.
