Boo! Scariest moments in gaming history

Oct 31st 2006 12:19PM (Joystiq)
Half life - Original

First time you turn around in the dark and a head crab gets you.

Halo - if you hadn't read reviews that told you about it - the first time the flood appear (en masse)

New GOW trailer pulls at your heartstrings [update 1]

Technically it's performed by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules, but who cares. ;-D

PS3 ads still peddling potentials

Oct 25th 2006 12:02PM (Joystiq)
2 things

1. Saying that the PS3 is more powerful as it has 8 processors compared to 3 in the 360 and 1,2 and soon 4 in the PC is misleading as the cell has a single general purpose processor and 7 SPEs. None of the SPEs in themselves are capable of running independently. If they show that in the UK the ASA will get them. You could use the same argument to say that PCs have always been dual processor as they've got a GPU.

2. If Cell is the future why is the only commercial application the PS3? Or are people waiting to see if Sony go bust first?

New DOAX2 trailer pushes the limits

There is something quite disturbing about the constantly moving norks. I don't think I've ever seen that happen in real life.

Were I in the US I'd submit this.

How important is storage capacity for today's games?

Oct 18th 2006 6:19PM (Joystiq)
I wonder how this sudden requirement for extra space will gel with the current movement towards digital distribution? ADSL speeds are increasing dramatically but downloading 1GB+ of data is still a pain. With a tenfold speed increase (which I wouldn't be surprised if that's all we see for a while) that would mean that 10Gb would still be a pain. And it would be easier to get in the car and drive to the shops than download 50Gb.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the need for smaller file sizes becomes for prevalent.

Applepeels on those times we're glad we got a Mac

Oct 17th 2006 1:05PM (TUAW.com)
My brother writes for some computer magazines and he told me once that any time he writes *anything* bad about Apple he receives an unprecedented amount of rabid email from fanboys. Reading this blog entry reminds me of this.

I've just bought an iMac after a fair amount of dithering. This isn't my first experience of Apple. I had a G3 iBook and I used Macs almost exclusively at Uni.

The iMac and Mac OS X are both pretty good pieces of hardware and software but by no means are they leaps and bounds ahead of Windows or any other OS. I think the fundamental difference between the two is the fact that it is much harder (although not impossible) to temporarily elevate priveledges which linux and os X do OK. I don't find this OS much more stable. I've had multiple programs crash out on me for no reason (with even less explanation than Windows gives). My iBook is almost unusable most of the time with frequent (and unexplained kernel panics) and I haven't had the time or inclination to completely wipe it. My brother's powerbook was prone to kernel panics too.

There are a couple of things here:

Mac are better because you can do everything "out of the box". That's because Microsoft are being sued for bundling software because it is considered anti-competitive. Apple apparently don't do that. Apple aren't ligitious like Microsoft either. Also Apple believe in consumer rights. iTunes DRM anyone?

Face it - Apple are a big multinational corporation no different from any other. They would happily sell your granny to bump the share price.

The comments here are mainly b*llocks. "Windows XP can't do zip files without third party software" - Yes it can. "When you print nothing appears to allow you to cancel it without going through lots of menus" - yes it does, look in the bottom right of the taskbar. "Windows asks me what I want to do with the files on a pendrive" - how rude! "It doesn't appear as a drive on the desktop" - Personally, I don't want it to.

A mac user (which everyone here will be) will always find it a little harder to find things in Windows, and conversely a windows user may get confused by a mac (don't kid yourself that the mac is easy to use if you're used to windows) Macs are not necessarily easier to fix than PCs as they aren't. (I am a computer engineer in a multi-platform environment) To the guy who reckons nobody will call him for advice if they had a mac - not true.

Macs and PCs are different. Get over it.

BTW - I will never agree that the mighty mouse is a good mouse. Apple keyboards rock but that mouse is rotten. ;-D

Play nice.

Ultimate gaming experience or pain in the neck?

Eh? Bullocks are young bulls. Bollocks is the correct spelling.

If you're going to mistakenly correct someone who is correct in the first place then I wouldn't bother.

Love Love Hamster loves to give us new screens

Oct 12th 2006 1:32PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I wonder how the realistic it'll be. For example, if you put two male Syrian hamsters in a cage together they'll fight to the death and the winner eats the brains of the loser. Will that be a mini-game like the nintendogs frisbee?

Where's Sony's 'Major Nelson?'

Oct 5th 2006 6:25PM (Joystiq)
>>Another waste of my time on this site.

Unfortunately by making that comment you've actually proved that you really have nothing better to do. That is a bit sad.

>>I discovered this site about a month ago - been
>>reading it consistantly ever since. I have three
>>opinions that I believe about the joystiq writers:

>>1) Pro XBOX360
>>2) Pro Wii
>>3) Anti PS3

I don't think they are. I've been following this whole debacle from day one, as most people here have, and I chose to buy a 360. TO be honest the main reason was that my Xbox crapped out on me. I didn't buy a PS2 when it came out. I heard all the hyperbole then I actually saw one and decided to stick with the PS1.

I don't think Joystiq are particularly Anti-sony, but I think that it is really difficult to do with the whole 5 million laptop battery recall, rootkit DRM debacle, PS3 delay in europe, A-trac and so on. Sony are their own worst enemy.

I used to think (and at the time I think I was right) that Sony were the best of the best when it came to electronics. I had a Sony stereo which was made circa 1980 and it kicked the arse (both sound and build quality) out of any system I've ever used. It was my Dad's and he replaced it with a new Sony. It was shite in comparison. I've bought Sony TV's which are much inferior to LG, Samsung, Philips, etc. Sony used to be the brand everyone aspired to but they've lost the plot.

The future of Sony depends on 2 things. The success of Blu-Ray and the success of the PS3. The PS3 will sell shedloads just based on customer loyalty. IN the end I think Blu-Ray will fail. This is entirely based on Sony's track record. Betamax (althought superior to VHS) failed. Minidisk (although superior to DCC) failed. A-TRAC (Although superior to MP3) failed. MemoryStick (although superior to MMC and xD) has pretty much failed. The PS3.....

To be honest I'm starting to get irritated with all the "Joystiq is shit" comments appearing every post. This is a blog. Admittedly run by some big companies, but it has never pretended to be gamespy or anything. If you don't like the stuff being posted then feel free to **** off. I would prefer to be able to read comments relevant to the subject without having to wade through all the petulant, whiney bullshit. If Joytiq or any of the fanboy sites aren't doing it for you then please, please, please, please, sod off and stop getting in the way. Why not try making your own site?
