David Jaffe leaves Eat Sleep Play, layoffs hit developer [Update]

Feb 7th 2012 9:55AM (Joystiq)
@GTThaAceman Baloney. The used game market has existed since the invention of video games. It absolutely has not magically overnight become the source of all evil in the game development biz. Nor has piracy, which has been a problem since the advent of recordable media. In the old days, it was bootlegs on 5.25" floppy disks. It has exploded since the dawn of the modern internet in the late 90's. The internet in it's current form has been widely available to the public for around 17 years now and only in the last several years have the game companies been whining incessantly in public forums about a perceived piracy epidemic, despite all-time record sales volumes on video games.

Used video games and piracy have been around for 30 years or more and the industry seems to have developed just fine despite these things. Does piracy and used game sales hurt the industry? Surely, but the extent of the damages are unknowable and no creedence should be paid to anyone that claims these are the sources of all the industry's problems. It goes deeper than that. Much deeper.

Game development costs have sky-rocketed with each new hardware generation. Gamers grow ever more demanding in terms of graphics, features, and scope. A typical commercial game now requires a vastly larger staff than in days long past. Average lengths of games these days are much longer than your typical NES game. Trade shows and other marketing events have grown ever more expensive to put on. And there's a lot more competition out there than ever before, also. I don't think we've ever had so many active studios working on games at one time. Numerous smaller studios are naturally going to have less money to work with than bigger operations and are thus less able to cope with a game or three that doesn't pan out to be a commercial success.

Because of all these things, "commercial success" seems to have underwent a re-definition of sorts, too. These days, if your game doesn't sell 1 million + copies, it's often viewed as some kind of failure or a flop. Obviously, only looking at sales volumes is a poor metric to use to judge the success of a game, but often it seems that the general public, press, and perhaps sometimes even investors, only look at the volumes of product pushed out the door, then compare that to the latest COD or GTA game, and never bother to consider what that actually means in terms of profits/losses for the studio.

Watch as Grace Chen walks you through the new PSP Store

No, you haven't been forced to use a PS3 to buy PSP content from the store in a long time... They launched the PC-based store, what? Nearly a year ago already? Check http://store.playstation.com. It'll redirect you to the appropriate spot. They'll have you install a downloader program that will transfer the downloads directly to your PSP via USB connected to your computer.

This means just about as much as all that adverts showing GT4 Mobile on the PSP back around the time the system launched... Don't mean nothin' until it's here...
