I remember seeing Ys ads in videogame magazines as a kid of about 8 or 9 and not understanding the anime style back then.. In my elementary school Nintendo Mario world, I didn't understand why all these Turbografx-16 games had all this art where the characters had huge eyes and pointy ears but I knew I liked it..
