Akai Katana trailer is a whirlwind of introduction

Apr 1st 2012 4:50AM (Joystiq)
@EndynOmni

I'd feel just a LITTLE better if the title didn't basically translate from Japanese into "Red Steel." That's a pretty strange choice of title.

SoulCalibur 5's story mode is one-fourth its originally planned size

Apr 1st 2012 2:18AM (Joystiq)
@Zimmy I'm a big fan of SoulCalibur, but after reading the reviews on release day of how lackluster the story mode was, I figured it was only worth about $15 to me, or one-fourth of the asking price.

Amazing how that math worked out.

ngmoco's Cousins expects free-to-play equivalent of Skyrim in a few years

@Granger Yeah, it's BS. If they design single player games that aren't a set price from the beginning and have some ridiculous method around the "cash for gold" concept like waiting 3 real days for an in-game pay day or something, I'll just quit gaming.

I want to either spend my money and enjoy an experience, or play a free game that skill and determination gets me through. What I'll ultimately be exposed to will be games that are constantly begging me for a handout like a panhandler.

Gamers already feel entitled. Make all games free and you won't make a dime.

Street Fighter X Tekken producer explains absent Xbox 360 co-op

@Rasral It is bullcrap, however, since some hackers tackled the file structure of this release earlier and found all of the DLC already on the disc, it's a lot less conducive to me buying it.

Street Fighter IV and MvC3 have me well trained, Capcom.

Skullgirls' Ms. Fortune separates skull from girl

Jan 4th 2012 5:28PM (Joystiq)
@ShadowXIII @PN04

It had nothing to do with the quality of Skullgirls. Konami is Japanese-centric, making and publishing Japanese games primarily for a Japanese audience, and if they sell outside of Japan, that's great. Koei is probably worse in that regard with all the Dynasty Warriors stuff, but yeah.

I just found it really weird that they'd back a western title, but beyond that, a western title that forces a distinctly anime aesthetic, something that historically doesn't go over well with Japanophiles here because it feels like a pale imitation, like Avatar or Code Lyoko or something. When it comes to cartoons, I think there's an audience, but when it's targeted at audiences that have been importing games from Japan for years, titles like Sudeki give them pause. (I also couldn't picture Konami publishing Sudeki, fwiw.)

I think there's plenty of room for good western-developed fighting games. Just look at the new Mortal Kombat. Japanese publishers have always looked on them in disdain though, which is why they haven't even considered doing a MK vs. title, even though Ed Boon is absolutely down for it. The big-eyed anime-inspired aesthetic just seems a little forced, but I guess it got them the publishing license, so I'm not going to fault them that.

UK indies putting together 'Little Big Bunch' charity bundle

As long as it has Steam codes and/or is DRM-free, I'm down for whatever. Humble Bundles, Indie Royale, Indie Gala, whatever, let's do this!

uDraw hasn't fared so well on Xbox 360 and PS3, THQ lowers its forecast

Dec 8th 2011 3:06AM (Joystiq)
Whichever market research firm told them putting uDraw out on 360 and PS3 was a good idea should get blacklisted. Advice honestly doesn't come any worse than that.

Know what else was a stupid idea? Wii Fit. Activision tried to bottle lightning and all it did was kill the Tony Hawk franchise. The sooner companies realize that they can't duplicate Wii success elsewhere, the sooner they'll stop hemorrhaging money.

'Pid' is a pretty platformer from Grin vets Might & Delight, planned for XBLA/PSN/PC in 2012

@KiraViBritania Click on the Giantbomb source link to actually view the trailer for the game, it's up now.

A third of Heavy Rain players kept all characters alive

@SpikePoint 74% completion? Makes perfect sense to me. I'm sure Nielsen has a similar metric for people that have managed to sit through the Matrix trilogy.

Let's go save some crazy money, with Sega PSN/XBLA sales

Nov 16th 2011 11:45PM (Joystiq)
Be advised, the one major downside of Crazy Taxi on XBLA (and Steam) is that they didn't bother getting the licenses from The Offspring and Bad Religion again for the soundtrack, nor the licenses to include real-world locations like KFC, Pizza Hut, or the now defunct Tower Records. As a result you're dashing through streets with generic garage band music to generic locations, making the game feel... Generic.

I hope one day they put out a proper re-release of Crazy Taxi, but this isn't it. The only thing they got right was at least allowing widescreen. I'm surprised they did that much.
