Phil Spencer confident in Kinect: It's 'fundamentally different' from PlayStation Move

Oct 26th 2010 11:39AM (Joystiq)
@SheppyReturns

1 million units would be a success? Not clear if you mean that over the lifetime of the console, or just this Christmas. Either way, the Kinect advertising budget alone is $500 million for this Christmas.

The real question is whether the item turns a net profit, whether by direct sales or by other revenue that can be attributed to it. You'd be very hard pressed to find an average of $500 in profit from each of the 1 million Kinects to offset the advertising costs - let alone whatever the continuing development bill and future advertising bills will be.

Interplay claims it wanted $50 million for Fallout rights, Bethesda refused

Lot of money, but considering the difficulty of breaking in with a completely unknown MMO, I don't think it is an unreasonable place for them to start.

Also "contests that claim - couldn't find another method to submit that.

Microsoft to spend a billion marketing Windows Phone 7 and Kinect

@Draco

I agree with your numbers. But, I actually think it's a pretty reasonable amount to spend on advertising going into the Christmas season.

I don't think they'll have trouble moving 5m units worldwide this year. 10m+ if it really catches on (Sony says they expect 15m Move units sold this year). The rest depends on how many new consoles you think they'll add based on a big Kinect campaign. Over the lifetime of a console, Microsoft can make some serious bank off XBOX Live fees.

Wiki says 41 million xbox 360s out there, so it's an investment of about $12 or more per extant console.

Fable 2 episodic experiment deemed 'massively successful' by Molyneux

The Molyneux bashing kind of annoys me, but I can't completely disagree. His comments these days remind me of the early stages of George Lucas' dementia.

Fable 2 sold 3.5 million copies, Lionhead 'needs' 5 million for Fable 3

Something tells me they meant "More Compelling" and not "Compulsive". Sure gaming can be a compulsive habit, but then you're grouped in with compulsive gambling, Compulsion (WoT) and all sorts of other nasty associations.

Anyone else read that as "undeserved" and think, hell yeah?

Seriously, the graph is completely made up, right? If there is only a single y-axis label that is...absent...I want to know what it is, since you'd obviously have to convert from money to happiness to get there.

It's ThinkGeeking: Online retailer selling new Dreamcasts

Any way to figure out how many hours a DC has logged? I still play through Skies of Arcadia about once a year with my Dreamcast (purchased release day).

Skies of Arcadia relegated to second page honorable mention status, HERESY! I'm going to the front page first topic to make a completely off topic mention of it.
