Well. I see that's not common knowledge among players, so I think some MMO developer should come here and answer your questions : ). MUDs were really first MMO games, and many MMO engines started as MUD-like systems. If I remember well, Turbine developers said exactly that on ddo.com forums.
That's a really good adventure pack. I recommend it. But underwater combat, while original in approach and fun in action, will no doubt make many people upset. It was overhyped, most people thought that whole DDO will now get "underwater combat". And that's only one single quest. Plus, it really isn't possible to apply to the rest of DDO. That's only a "deep-sea-sahaugin-invented-combat", I'd say ; ).
But is this Adventure Pack worth 450 TP? Heck: 1. Very big Explorable Area, 2. Top-notch graphics, 3. Nice new features, like flooding quest area with water and then swimming in it, 4. New type of monster ("plant"), 5. Old favorites like Will 'o Wisps and Mud Men : ), 6. Some weird crafting device. 7. Very interesting loot - many sets requiring 2 items for a set bonus. 8. Many optionals, including a boss in Red Fens, gelatinous boss ; ), and another evil uber-killer, 9. An interesting, stealth-oriented quest with nice, atmospheric story and some underdark flavor ; ). That's how i see Update 6. So it's not only worth 450 TP, it's a must have Adventure Pack for people around level 9. It will be popular.
But hey, I'd _love_ if Turbine made this "Neverwinter Online". You can say anything, but they really know D&D and their universes like no other developer. Just check posts of their developers, they're really deep into pen&paper D&D rules and lore. Of course - DDO is a different game. It was made to be TPP, action-oriented and tactical hack 'n slash game. They can't change it now, that's what DDO players expect to receive. But their new modules (Adventure Packs) show that they have exceptionally talented storytellers - quests have many endings (in an MMO!) based on your actions, dialogs are deep and intelligent, there's that PnP feel to it.
So if anyone could make it right (other than BioWare), that's Turbine. All they'd need is a chance to do it, they're really experienced in D&D now, and getting only better at it.
Plus, Atari and Turbine removed their lawsuits against each other. I know Atari wants to support Cryptic and only Cryptic, but who knows? WotC would be VERY unhappy if they failed. And WotC are good friends with Turbine. So maybe one of those 2 new Turbine MMOs is NwNO? They've already said they're working on player-made content and toolsets. We'll see.
WHAT?? :D Turbine created DDO by themselves, basing it on much improved Asheron's Call engine. Then they released LotrO on the same engine, modifying it for open world.
Really, guys, don't make me laugh :D. Google who has developed DDO. A tip: Turbine alone!
I agree. If Turbine ever did "DDO 2", heck, it MUST be set in Greyhawk! Really the best setting of all, and all other popular settings stole something from Greyhawk.
But Eberron is great as well, and really unique. It's not a "mix of all settings" people, it's really one of its own and very atmospheric. But I'd like to see other continents in DDO - especially now, that Turbine's developers are very good and deep with Eberron lore. They should start fleshing out "second home" on Khorvaire, I'd like to see such expansion coming out.
Let's start with this: 1/3 of DDO's quests is free.
You have to buy Adventure Packs, but you can afford it - VIP subscription gives you 500 TP, which is average price for good Adventure Pack (usually 4+ long quests, explorable area, sometimes a raid). But let's not compare typical MMO quests with DDO's - here they're all whole stories, have own terrains and are much longer.
Plus, there are frequent promotions of Adv. Packs and VIP subscription too. You can get 1000TP for a month of VIP sometimes, which is double the normal. 5K of TP and you have most of the game's Adventure Packs, for every server and every character - forever. So you don't need to be VIP anymore to play them.
