Swag Saturday: Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 controllers for all those holiday games
Nov 14th 2009 8:51PM (Joystiq)Last holiday I played PAIN all day with my then 3 1/2 year old daughter. I think that may have been some of the most fun I've had gaming in a long time, seeing her laugh at launching the man in cow suit into the air, just to have him smack into something.
Aparently this holiday, she was to buy me DJ Hero (but I beat her to it and picked it up earlier in the week). She says she thought that would be a good one for everyone, but again she won't try it. lol. Women...

Jul 24th 2009 1:24PM (Joystiq)Wii viewed as 'intriguing' to BioWare
Jun 18th 2009 10:25PM (Joystiq)lol
Seriously though, did anyone NOT see this coming? Every company just about out there now, wants to figure out how they can get a piece of the Wii pie.
Unfortunately though, a lot of the games companies are trying to make for us gamers looking for deeper gameplay experiences, aren't really doing all that well, unless they are made by the big N themselves it seems.
Lets hope BioWare isn't going to try to make something like "Lets Catch: Dragons", and instead can deliver a really cool RPG for the system, something the Wii could definately use imo.

Jun 17th 2009 10:23PM (Joystiq)Sony theory: From PlayStation to Wii and back again
Apr 23rd 2009 3:55PM (Joystiq)Also, most consumers like to have some PHYSICAL property that they own. This may change in time, but we are talking a generation or two - not a few years. Most people are materialistic, they like to SEE what they own, and want others to see their collections as well. It's part of the draw of having a collection. Only extreme tech nerds are going to compare terrabytes of movie downloads, most "average" people are going to compare their physical collections, and proudly display them.
Physical media is NOT going away any time soon, and for this reason, Blu Ray will eventually catch on (and numbers show, it is gaining ground, even if slowly, it's still rising.)
Sony theory: From PlayStation to Wii and back again
Apr 23rd 2009 2:43PM (Joystiq)I've been gaming since my dad brought home an original pong machine. Then it was the Atari, a Texas Instruments (TI 99-4a), and so on and so forth. I've owned pretty much every console, except the Neo Geo and Sega Saturn.
I have to agree that I think if people REALLY saw the value of a PS3 as a true High Definition Media System, it would gain a lot more ground. Sony, in my opinion, has really dropped the ball on marketing the thing properly. Not to mention, they need to hire some better software developers, so that their media software WORKS flawlessly, so that you get what you pay for (I'm talking better jpeg and xvid support, as well as support for wider range of codecs).
Anyone who can do a bit of logical thought, and some basic mathematics too, can easily see the PS3 is NOT more expensive than the Xbox 360, when you add in all of the crap you must purchase fo the 360 to even be half the media center that the PS3 is (I'm talking Blu Ray, wireless networking out of the box, etc.).
I do think that eventually, as more people adopt HD televisions, and look to start to purchase Blu Ray movies over standard DVD's, that they will look at the PS3 in a different way. And of course, those people who have been burned by Microsoft's abysmal build quality of the 360, only need to look at a PS3 now for a MUCH BETTER QUALITY console, as far as stability and build quality go. I sold my 360 finally a few months ago, and haven't missed it one bit. Netflix? I Get that already on my laptop, which streams to my PC. And guess what? Netflix is coming to other consoles as soon as their timed exclusive with Microsoft is over.
Joystiq Review: Excitebots: Trick Racing
Apr 22nd 2009 5:13PM (Joystiq)The reviewer fails to even mention all of the minigame modes. The minigames not only show up while racing the regular tracks, but there are also a good handful (at least 10) seperate minigames to play.
Also, it sounds to me like the reviewer didn't play past the first cup or two, because getting an S Rating on all tracks (to unlock Super Excite mode, which is MUCH more difficult), takes quite a bit of practice and patience, not to mention learning the courses. This is just like any other arcade racer - practice and replay.
Thanks to the minigames, the added craziness of bars to swing on, transforming into a robot to "run" instead of driving, each race is quite fun to play on it's own. The seperate minigame events are also a ton of fun, especially in groups.
And then you have one of the best online packages in a Wii game to date - that actually WORKS seamlessly (although there is still the hindrance of Friend codes if you want to race against a specific friend, but unfortunately that's one known limitation for Wii online games).
Seems to me in a mad rush to get a "review" out, someone took a test drive around the first 2 cups, and decided they had seen it all. This game is MUCH improved over Excite Truck, which I will definately agree was fun until you got through all of the tracks, but that was pretty much all it offered. This game offers so much more in races themselves, and in extra modes, that I find it absolutely appalling that the reviewer here fails to even mention half of the game.
BTW - the controls are spot on, even for an old fart like me, who doesn't game anywhere NEAR what I did in my youth. Take a little time to practice, and turns are quite easy to drift through, boosts and tricks are very easy to pull off too.
GHWT drums don't work with Rock Band
Oct 27th 2008 7:20PM (Joystiq Playstation)I hate having to buy a new instrument, regardless of the company. And I can't really decide between the new RB2 or GH:WT guitars... make my purchase much easier if I can just buy both games, and use my RB1 instruments...
Guitar Hero World Tour launch DLC now on XBLM
Oct 23rd 2008 11:01AM (Joystiq)I love Harmonix's work too, Amplitude and Frequency were great games. The original Guitar Hero games were good. Rock Band 2 should have been a DLC patch for Rock Band One though honestly (and the track list isn't that great at all), and Guitar Hero World Tour (good or not) actually DID step up it's game, and add something new to the package at the same time (the song creation mode).
And I also agree with previous statements, The note charts between GH:3, GH:Aerosmith, and Rock Band, are not THAT different. All the games have songs that are fun to play, Songs that suck, and both companies could be viewed as sellouts to some extent, so get over it already.
Harmonix/MTV games is selling full album of Chilli Peppers for TWENTY BUCKS. Yes, I'm aware that it's still cheaper than buying each song individually, but half of the songs on that album suck anyhow, not to mention you get no option to export an mp3 to listen to the stuff elsewhere. Guitar Hero/Activision is no different in this respect either, paying more for Metallica songs in the game, than you would on the album itself.
It's all a bit much, from both companies, if you really want to get down to it. But, since I like rhythm games, especially ones with a fake plastic guitar, I'll most likely end up getting them both, and then showing BOTH companies that I feel the DLC is twice as expensive as it should be, BY NOT BUYING ANY OF IT. And Rock Band 2, only reason I'll be picking that one up, is so I can finally sell my copy of RB1, get the song sort features that should have been patched into the original, and I get it on the cheap from Gamefly.
