There's really only one continuous motion that'll get you Watts and Steps, and that's a smooth, constant pendulum-like motion. Randomly whipping it around gets you nothing.

I'm sorry, but you don't randomly expand the campaign of a game, years after it was released. These are crafty times. A lot of companies are choosing to play with their fanbase, and give hints and quests before outright announcing their games. And Valve has always been a crafty company. That's, like, double crafty.
