LG signs 5-year contract with Apple for displays

Jan 12th 2009 11:20PM (TUAW.com)
Hm. That Wikipedia link suggested far, far less than 30,000 hours, but Wikipedia is not reliable. Sorry.

I'm still using a CRT I bought in 1995—much of what I do depends on CRT color calibration—so a few years isn't something I'm interested in. I know... that makes one.

HOWTO: Preparing an overlay for QuickTime Pro

You can also do this in iDVD (which every Mac owner gets for free) by replacing the Apple logo in iDVD's Resources folder with the logo of your choice and turning on the watermarking feature. A little nerdier -- and obviously only for DVDs -- but if you produce DVDs and want consistency, it's the way to go.

Feed your Apple TV with Archive.org

While overall the quality of the Moving Images section does vary greatly, the Prelinger Archives and the unfortunately named AV Geeks section both have mostly high-quality transfers of educational, industrial training, and government propaganda shorts that deserve a night (or even a festival). Those sections are also popular with remix artists and fuel the annual Stockstock competition.

I can't wait to work for Microsoft for free! I'm glad you support their decision that we all should do so. (I always wanted to work at home, but the last 5 million offers in that direction sounded suspicious. I know J-dawg won't screw me, especially if you guys say so!

TiVo undelete forthcoming!

Jan 25th 2006 10:34PM (Engadget)
I've "only" got a Series 1, so I'll never see this anyway, but I'm at a loss.

If it's so hard to delete a show -- and my S1 doesn't really make it seem a burden -- why does anyone need an undelete?

I've had my Tivo just about five years now, and I don't think I've ever deleted anything accidentally. Who are the people who need this?

As noted in a couple of replies here, the Tivo itself deletes shows only when it needs the room, so anything it deletes is probably going to be overwritten anyway. This new feature is strictly to undo user deletions, but ... well, I just don't get it.

I do note that I have plenty of programming on my Tivo, including the '04 and '05 World Series, on Save Until I Delete status. With an upgraded system (50 hours at best, 150 at basic quality), it's no big deal; I can still keep about two weeks of fresh programming while I wait to move the SUID'd shows over to burn to DVD.

So if you don't want something deleted, there's been a way to do that since Series 1.

I apologize if this seems to be a troll; it's a genuine question. I just don't see the workflow that creates the problem.

Fizzy Fruit in schools

Moto in Chicago serves carbonated fruit. It's OK; I've had the carbonated grapes. I see their current menu mentions a carbonated fruit salsa, which might be a bit more interesting. (And to the extent this sounds like a putdown, it's more that it's really good once, but I don't really have any compulsion to have another.) Their site's at motorestaurant.com/flash/index.html and as that implies they overuse Flash.

Not much good for those of us who go to butchers and greengrocers and bakeries, unfortunately.

Free movies that won't get you arrested

Dec 10th 2005 5:03PM (Joystiq Playstation)
I took a look -- the site rendered horribly on both Safari and Firefox (everything ends up in one column, maybe 15 characters wide), and although I have to applaud the time he's spent converting and offering the movies, there wasn't anything there I'd want over most of the stuff in the Prelinger Collection at archive.org. And sorry, Josh, but yes, you're a tool. Redistributing copyrighted property is stealing. Am I defending the record companies? No. Does anything you said in your long spattering of random thoughts make stealing right? No. Are you still a tool? Yes.
