Ask Engadget HD: HD projector or HDTV? 2010 edition

Jun 10th 2010 3:17PM (Engadget HD)
Ive been an exclusive (save a 20" lcd puter monitor) projoctor guy for years now. Movies are great at 106", but Im not sure I would want one for family when the room does have to be dimmed for the best results. Its easy to get cheap roll-up blinds that hide perfectly behind standard curtains (and thus easily uber darken a room), but lighting in the room will always be needed to a certain degree and family makes me think it wont be as enjoyable with family running around and needing some level of light. Barring that and periodic ($300) bulb replacements there is nothing like a plus 100" display for all your watching needs. Projectors have dropped drastically in price in the last few years...Ill never go back to flat panel displays again.

Sanyo PLV-Z4000 3LCD projector gets more colorful, cheaper

Meh, my z2000 brand new was $1600 after the $600 mir, its 1080p and only a couple years old. Id look for the older models anyway as that performance can be had for cheaper than 2500 (save the billions of colors I suppose)

DirecTV raises its HD channels claim to 160, disses Dish for juking the numbers

As always a big thanks to providers who, for the most part, focus solely on quantity rather than the QUALITY hd was meant to be. This is just what HD languished for so many years in obscurity for; channel counts. TGFBR.

I think Amar G. Bose has the patent on all the same drivers in a single enclosure for 'wow' prices...I smell a lawsuit in the making.

Toshiba launching Blu-ray player by year's end

Jul 18th 2009 5:16PM (Engadget HD)
As a recovering hddvd ONLY collector turned blu ONLY collector, Ill not soon forget my distaste for Tosh and their counter-productive attitude after defeat. Sure, hddvd was the best format (at the time) and Ill always believe that, but Ill NEVER forgive Tosh for pushing dvd up converting tech and outlandish claims of 'near hd quality' possible with their dvd tech. Dont get me wrong, Ive no love for sony either (especially being the ps3 AND 360 owner that I am), but I will NEVER buy a Toshiba blu player, and Ill never recommend one to anyone else either!

Panasonic's DMP-B15 portable Blu-ray player: $800, ships this month

Jun 1st 2009 1:44PM (Engadget HD)
Only way I can see this fetching $800 is making it a oled 1920x1080 display. I mean, you can debate the benefit of that resolution in this size all day long, but that will never be the point to me. The point is 1024 X 600 lcd is a joke for an $800, albeit portable, blu ray player with a 9" display :(

Programming times are great, but are far more helpful if you shared the zone.
