Sony has 'no plans for a PS3 price drop,' calls rumors 'false'
Mar 30th 2009 4:16PM (Joystiq)No, Sony is currently losing ~$50 a console.
Somehow I don't see Sony being willing to lose $150 a console. As much as we all hate to hear it, Sony has bought big into the idea of the PS3 being a 10-year product. As far as they're concerned they've mapped their product cycle to be peaking in another 2-4 years. It's basically like they're saying that the PS3 is a brand new product, it's still in introductory phases, only the early adopters are buying it. Within 2-4 years it will become more mainstream and more people will purchase it and it will make its way towards market maturity and probably 5-7 years into the product cycle, with the remaining 3-5 years being full maturity going into decline, like the PS2.
The catch here, of course, is that people can buy the same thing for less - i.e. the XBox360 - and to a lesser extent the Wii. In terms of overall 3rd party support, the vast majority of games developed these days are cross platform, so there's very little incentive for people to buy an extra console, which means those big "system sellers" have to be all the much bigger to move the consoles.
Which is probably why you keep hearing everybody complain about how disappointing sales in games like LBP are - while it may be a big game, it wasn't big enough to move enough consoles to get more people to buy it.
Simple Supply vs Demand.
Mass Effect 2 coming to Xbox 360, PC in 'early 2010'
Mar 17th 2009 2:18PM (Joystiq)While I doubt anything SUPER DUPER© will happen for having a pre-existing save game, the allure is large enough that it's a worthwhile selling point [to bioware].
So it becomes a question of how much of an influencing factor does that ability have? Bioware has already come out at least on one occasion telling us to save our saved game data, so it seems like they've got something exciting planned with, or at least exciting enough to make a big deal about it. Potential PS3 owners wouldn't have that ability AT ALL and with as fickle as the fanboys are these days that's enough to not buy it.
Is it make or break? I doubt it, but you know a fuss would be raised...as is already happening.
Besides, historically speaking Bioware develops for Microsoft platforms for the most part. Also, the game is going to be based on the existing engine (I would guess anyway), they'd have to rebuild the game from the ground up on the PS3 rather than just update and port like they're going to with ME2.
Mass Effect 2 coming to Xbox 360, PC in 'early 2010'
Mar 17th 2009 1:49PM (Joystiq)I'm all for multi-platforming and everything, but the world isn't going to end if there are platform exclusives. PS3 ain't gonna get Halo, 360 ain't gonna get Kill Zone. I know this is a novel thought and all, but if you want a game on a certain console...buy the console and then buy the game! Nobody will tear up your Fanboy Card™ if you buy that other console. Just don't tell anybody! It might ruin your street cred!
Joyswag Holidaze: Joystiq Timbuk2 bag & Zune

Dec 9th 2008 10:37AM (Joystiq)One can never be caught unawares when running along either delivering messages or running from those pesky blues, so it's nice to have a good sized bag where you can carry along an extra pair or shoes.
And who knows who else has been up there on those roof tops? Maybe they left some gum up there, then you definitely need to carry a small pocket knife along to scrap that off your nice running shoes, and what better place to put it then in a conveniently sized pocket?
And you always want to look your best when you're running, so try to bring along some personal grooming supplies, toothbrush, comb, floss, toothpaste, maybe even some deodorant, one can never be too unprepared!
